Nam June Paik (1932–2006) is now considered to be the most influential creator in visual arts. He is said to be the first artist who presented television as a source of artistic experience. However, nowadays many people forget about his musical beginnings. Starting as a musician, he was inspired by, for example, John Cage, whose philosophical way of thinking had a positive impact on Paik’s future experiments with music and objects. Exposition of Music – Electronic Television (1963, Wuppertal) was artist’s symbolic transfer from music to visual arts, presenting prepared pianos together with prepared TV’s. The article presents the exhibition as well as the environment created by Paik, showing the equality, importance and impact of two not so different kinds of art.

The aim of the present article is to describe the unique idiom of electronic music in the perspective of semiotics. The starting point of this reflection is an attempt at a definition of what electronic music is. It then moves on to questions concerning the explanation of the two main concepts of semiotics, sign and meaning. Here, the goal is to outline the general tendencies in interpreting these concepts in the context of Pierce’s theory of sign and in the context of other concepts utilized in the field of narratology, i.e. diegesis and mimesis; with the aim of transferring these interpretations to the field of electronic music. The important nodes of this reflection are illustrated with specific examples of electronic musical works. The article also explores the semantic and cognitive attributes of electronic music and the relationships between them. The understanding of meaning in electronic music is explained in terms of analogies between the characteristics of cognitive processing of the sounds of everyday life and sounds utilized in electronic music.

Organology, the study of musical instruments, has traditionally concentrated on the documentation of instruments: their history, roles in culture, and classification. However, as post-modern, feminist, and post-colonial perspectives have questioned some of the assumptions inherent in historiographical, ethnographic, and positivist endeavours because of their part in reproducing hegemonic ideologies, re-thinking organology and thus developing a richer account of musical instruments has become an urgent task. With this regard a queer perspective in organology, in particular informed by Judith Butler’s theories of “gender trouble,” is crucial in agitating normative beliefs, values, and attitudes that underpin notions of instrumental identity, interaction, and meaning. A queer organology becomes especially significant in the critical engagement with musical instruments like those invented by the British composer, performer, and inventor Hugh Davies (1943-2005), and in particular his entirely found, amplified, new musical instruments. This is because the challenges to traditional instrumental ontologies, the “instrumental trouble” that these instruments pose: reveal the boundaries of conventional organological approaches and methodologies, which are unsuitable in capturing their full significance. Deploying Butler’s concepts of recognition, performativity, and subversion in their study can thus represent an effective strategy in the development of a coherent critique of Davies’s instruments, but also in offering an opportunity to further the understanding of the fundamental importance that musical instruments play in the articulations of music, as part of what may be called an “instrumental turn.”

The aim of this article is to analyse the relationship between bioacoustics, electronic sound production, and popular music. The electronic revolution in music production in the mid-1960s, inspired by the invention of electronic musical instruments for sound synthesis (Moog, Buchla, ARP Odyssey), was given a prominent place not only in the academic avant-garde laboratories but also in the popular music market, resulting in the emergence of new musical genres and challenging the classical instruments of rock music (guitar, bass, drums). However, abstract electronic sounds and sound-objects ‘discovered’ by rock and roll artists inevitably required new points of reference transcending beyond the existing canon (blues – classical music). One of them was to imitate (through synthesisers) or employ (through bioacoustic recordings) the sounds of insects as adequate equivalents of the ‘sound masses’ generated by electronic instruments and commonly used sound effects. It resulted in a significant re-evaluation of music production and the relationship between popular culture and avant-garde art.

The author considers whether Fryderyk Chopin and his oeuvre may be regarded as part of popular culture - and if so, to what extent. However, the text is mostly taken up with analysis of popular instrumental music inspired by Chopin’s works in various ways: from simple quotation, adaptation and transcription to more sophisticated instrumentation and arrangement, free improvisation or even the creation of a completely new work derived from a single motif or sample from Chopin. Consequently, the author deals with the problem of reception, but also with the issue of transculturation and the relationship between high and popular culture. The article shows and describes the variety of Chopin inspiration in a wide range of styles and genres of popular music, such as rock music, easy-listening, electronic music, dance music and disco.

Krajobraz w filmie oddawany jest nie tylko w obrazie, ale i w dźwięku. Autor ukazał jego kreację na przykładzie dziesięciu filmów science fiction, zrealizowanych na przestrzeni blisko 70 lat, pokazujących pozaziemskie planety. W opisie ich fonosfery wykorzystał teorię pejzażu dźwiękowego R. Murraya Schafera oraz analizę audio-wizualną Michela Chiona. W pionierskich filmach z przełomu lat 50. i 60. użycie eksperymentalnych efektów elektroakustycznych zamazuje rozróżnienie między dźwiękiem a muzyką i jest jednym z elementów wywołujących wrażenie niesamowitości. W środkowej części artykułu autor porównał adaptacje dwóch kanonicznych utworów gatunku – Solaris Stanisława Lema i Diuny Franka Herberta – które wprowadzają kontrastujące planety. Zestawienie to pokazało, jak żywioły przekładają się na dźwięki i jaką funkcję owe dźwięki mogą pełnić. W ostatnim rozdziale zostały opisane dwa seriale będące najnowszymi odsłonami fantastycznych sag: Star Trek i Gwiezdnych wojen. W pierwszym powraca wątek żyjącej planety, a w drugim toniki dźwiękowej opartej na materiale.

In cinema, the landscape is reflected not only in the image, but in the sound as well. The article discusses the creation of the latter based on ten science-fiction films, dating from a period of nearly 70 years, that show extraterrestrial planets. Their soundscapes are described in terms of R. Murray Schafer’s theory and Michel Chion’s audio-visual analysis. In pioneering titles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, the use of experimental electro-acoustic effects blurs the distinction between sound and music, creating an impression of the uncanny. In the middle part of the article, adaptations of two canonical texts of the genre are compared – Stanisław Lem’s Solaris and Frank Herbert’s Dune – which introduce contrasting planets. Thanks to the juxtaposition, it turns out how their elements translate into sounds and what function these sounds can take. The last section describes two series that are the latest spin-offs of the fantastic sagas: Star Trek and Star Wars. In the first, the motif of a living planet returns, and in the second, the material-based keynote sound.

Founded in November 1957, the Experimental Studio of Polish Radio (SEPR) was the fifth electronic music studio in Europe and the seventh in the world. It was an extraordinary phenomenon in the reality of the People’s Poland of those times, equally exceptional as the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, established around the same time - in 1956. Both these ‘institutions’ would be of fundamental significance for contemporary Polish music, and they would collaborate closely with one another. But the history of Polish electroacoustic music would to a large extent be the history of the Experimental Studio. The first autonomous work for tape in Poland was Włodzimierz Kotoñski’s Etiuda konkretna (na jedno uderzenie w talerz) [Concrete study (for a single strike of a cymbal)], completed in November 1958. It was performed at the Warsaw Autumn in i960, and from then on electroacoustic music was a fixture at the festival, even a marker of the festival’s ‘modernity’, up to 2002 - the year when the last special ‘concert of electroacoustic music’ appeared on the programme. In 2004, the SEPR ceased its activities, but thanks to computers, every composer can now have a studio at home. There are also thriving electroacoustic studios at music academies, with the Wroclaw studio to the fore, founded in 1998 by Stanisław Krupowicz, the leading light of which became Cezary Duchnowski. Also established in Wroclaw, in 2005, was the biennial International Festival of Electroacoustic Music ‘Música Electrónica Nova’.
