The paper contains a concise analysis of the most important motifs of discussions going on in Europe, which concern the future of the traditional institution of university and which are especially relevant in the Polish context. The seven motifs which are particularly important in the Polish context are: equal access to higher education and expansion of educational systems; co-funding of education; financial independence of universities; higher education as a private and a public good; entrepreneurial system of universities; the changing dynamics of the private versus public relation in higher education; and regional mission of universities. Prezentowany tekst zawiera krótką analizę najważniejszych motywów dyskusji toczących się w Europie i dotyczących przyszłości tradycyjnej instytucji uniwersytetu, które są istotne w kontekście polskim. Siedem motywów najważniejszych w polskim kontekście to równość dostępu do szkolnictwa wyższego i ekspansja systemów edukacyjnych, współfinansowanie studiów, finansowa niezależność uczelni, wyższe wykształcenie jako dobro prywatne i dobro publiczne, przedsiębiorczość uczelni, zmieniająca się dynamika relacji prywatne – publiczne w szkolnictwie wyższym oraz regionalna misja uczelni.
