This study situates the phenomenon of intercultural religious encounters in a globalization perspective. It presents them as a struggle of indigenous groups to carve out their own cultural space in the global scheme, as an effort to indigenize modernity and spirituality. By means of a discursive analysis of a particular Maya lecture held in the Czech Republic, the author traces the gradual formation and constitution of a global spiritual discourse that arises through the following factors: the continuous connecting, merging or gluing together of diverse religious elements; the universalization of rhetoric and the emphasizing of native roots; and the likening and delimiting of the self to the dominant Euro-American culture. The aim is to show that this is a deeply ambiguous process that entails both continuity and discontinuity, convergence and divergence, but also – and perhaps most importantly - equivocation; that it is a dynamic process of translation in which much is lost, but in which something is also found.

The concept of a dialogue is considered in general terms from the standpoint of its referential presuppositions. The semantics of dialogue implies that dialogue participants must generally have a collective intentionality of agreed-upon references that is minimally sufficient for them to be able to disagree about other things, and ideally for outstanding disagreements to become clearer at successive stages of the dialogue. These points are detailed and illustrated in a fictional dialogue, in which precisely these kinds of referential confusions impede progress in shared understanding. It is only through a continuous exchange of question and answer in this dialogue case study that the meanings of key terms and anaphorical references are disambiguated, and a relevantly complete collective intentionality of shared meaning between dialogue participants is achieved. The importance of a minimally shared referential semantics for the terms entering into reasoning and argument in dialogue contexts broadly construed cannot be over-estimated. Where to draw the line between referential agreement and disagreement within any chosen dialogue, as participants work toward better mutual understanding in clearing up referential incongruities, is sometimes among the dialogue’s main points of dispute.

Fenomen ambiwalencji przenika wszystkie wymiary egzystencji, języka i kultury. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie tego zjawiska w obszarze humoru, ironii oraz gry językowej. W tym celu omówiono genezę oraz najważniejsze możliwości definicyjne pojęcia ambiwalencji. W dalszej kolejności ukazano możliwości typizacji ambiwalencji w języku, by następnie przedstawić wzajemne zależności ambiwalencji oraz ironii i humoru. Założenia teoretyczne zilustrowano bogatym materiałem językowym w postaci tzw. definicji humorystycznych, które jako niekonwencjonalna podstawa materiałowa stanowią nieprzebrane źródło wieloznaczności oraz jej celowego poszukiwania i generowania w celu wywołania efektów humorystycznych.

The phenomenon of ambiguity permeates all dimensions of human existence, language and culture. The aim of the article is to show it in the field of humour, irony and language games. Thus, the genesis and the most important possibilities of defining this phenomenon are discussed. Then some types of ambiguities in language are presented to show interdependencies of ambiguity, irony and humour. The main theoretical principles will be exemplified by using humorous definitions, which as unconventional research data constitute a rich source of ambiguity and its deliberate use and forming in order to induce humorous effects.
