The paper presents a review of selected definitional issues and theoretical concepts related to the phenomenon of immigrant self-employment. A chronological analysis of the developments of the academic discourse on the topic allows detecting the interconnections between various approaches and understanding their growing complexity. The inquiry is complemented with a review of most recent empirical studies, what enables an assessment of the applicability and usefulness of long-established concepts for framing contemporary studies. Based on the appraisal of gathered material this paper also points to the limitations and possible areas of development of future research in the field.

W artykule na podstawie koncepcji enklaw opisano inicjatywy kulturalne i edukacyjne Stowarzyszenia Miłośników Kultury Łemkowskiej. Autorka zwraca uwagę na dwoisty charakter inicjatyw stowarzyszenia. Z jednej strony bowiem działania polegają na integrowaniu społeczności wokół wspólnych wartości, uwydatnianiu różnicy kulturowej, podtrzymaniu odrębności, czyli zamykaniu się przed wpływami rozmywającymi odmienność etniczną Łemków. Jest to więc umacnianie granic enklawy etnicznej. Z drugiej zaś strony te same inicjatywy są wyrazem otwierania się Łemków na środowisko, „wychodzenia z cienia”, otwartego prezentowania swojej kultury i pełnoprawnego uczestniczenia w życiu kulturalnym środowiska i poza nim.

The article describes cultural and educational initiatives of the Association of the Lemko Culture Enthusiasts based on the concept of enclaves. Attention is drawn to the dual nature of the initiatives of the association. On the one hand, the actions consist in integrating the community around common values, enhancement of cultural difference, sustaining distinctness, i.e., closing off against the effects which muddy the ethnic diversity of the Lemkos. Therefore it is a strengthening of boundaries of the Lemko ethnic enclave. On the other hand, the same initiatives are an expression of the opening up of the Lemkos onto the environment, “getting out from under the shadow”, the open presentation of their culture and full participation in cultural life of the environment and beyond it.

W artykule skoncentrowano się na relacji między niektórymi rodzajami oddziaływania enklawy, co może prowadzić do wielu skutków społecznych ograniczających jednostki, lub przeciwnie – sprzyjać zajmowaniu wysokich pozycji społecznych. Obezwładniająca jednostki moc wynika z siły sieci społecznych, wytwarzanych przez nią kapitałów – ekonomicznego i kulturowego, z jej socjalizacyjnej funkcji, prowadzącej do tego, że staje się najważniejszą, a niekiedy jedyną grupą odniesienia. W konsekwencji może ograniczać możliwości awansu społecznego w społeczeństwie, tworzyć obszary samowykluczenia ekonomicznego, kulturowego, a także politycznego jako skutków społecznych presji wywieranych przez enklawę, ale może także wyposażać swych członków w „ponadprzeciętny” kapitał niezbędny do osiągnięcia sukcesu w szerszym społeczeństwie.

The study focuses on the relationship between certain enclaves and its members – individuals. An attempt was made to demonstrate that the power of an enclave can lead to a number of social impacts that restrict individuals, and even their participation in social life outside the enclave, or – on the contrary – it can promote the achievement of a high social position. This power that overwhelms the individuals results from the strength of social networks, economic and cultural capitals that are generated by it, from the socialization function, leading to the fact that the enclave becomes the most important and sometimes the only reference group. As a consequence, the enclave may limit the opportunities for social advancement in a society, it may create economic, cultural, social and political self-exclusion from the wider society as a result of the social impact of the pressure exerted by the enclave but it can also equip its members in the “above average” capital that is necessary to succeed in the wider society.
