Rosnące zainteresowanie szeroko pojmowaną tematyką etnokulturową – tak na polu nauki, jak i w życiu publicznym w ogóle – datuje się szczególnie od lat 60. XX wieku. Tendencja ta inspiruje naukowców i polityków do analizowania jej znaczenia tak z europejskiej, jak i pozaeuropejskiej perspektywy porównawczej. Procesy etnicznej mobilizacji narodów małych i bezpaństwowych okazały się stale obecnymi zjawiskami społecznymi. U schyłku minionego wieku dopomogły one nawet w zburzeniu dotychczasowego porządku ustrojowo-terytorialnego. Wymienione wyżej procesy zwiększają potrzebę odniesienia się do pojęć ułatwiających zarówno ich zrozumienie, jak też ich dalszą ewolucję. W pierwszym rzędzie dotyczy to takich terminów, jak naród i nacjonalizm, etniczność, państwo, w tym zwłaszcza narodowe, ranga kwestii językowych czy (etno)regionalnych.

The interest in some broadly understood ethnocultural issues – both in the field of science and public life – has been growing since the 1960s. This tendency has been inspiring the politicians and researchers to make comparative analyses of its importance both from the European and extra-European perspective. The processes of ethnic mobilization of small and stateless nations have become an ever-present social phenomenon. At the end of the previous century they contributed to the collapse of the existing governmental and territorial order. The above mentioned processes make it necessary to investigate the notions which facilitate their understanding and enable their further evolution. This concerns especially such terms as nation, nationalism, ethnicity, the state and, especially, the nation-state, as well as the importance of the linguistic and (ethno)regional issues.
