The present study focuses on the issue of the achievement of stability in life by former amateur fencers in the context of post-communist Polish society. The main aim of the study was an analysis of non-sport spheres of life of former fencers, such as occupation, material situation, family life, and health. The sample consisted of 51 former Polish fencers. A diagnostic survey was conducted with the use of the questionnaire technique. It was revealed that the subjects successfully achieved social stability after they retired from sports. However, since they had been amateur athletes, they had been forced to choose appropriate strategies and actions during their sports careers to ensure professional, economic, and family stability in their future lives. Those who experienced difficulties in combining the role of athlete with other social roles were most often forced to give up fencing. The former fencers observe a multidirectional impact of sports on all aspects of their lives.

Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono na przełomie 2016 i 2017 r. wśród byłych zawodników uprawiających kolarstwo. Objęto nimi 51 osób: 17 kobiet (33%) i 34 mężczyzn (67%) w wieku 22–66 lat (średnia wieku: 33 lata). Na podstawie Inwentarza Zachowań Zdrowotnych (IZZ) Juczyńskiego oceniono zachowania zdrowotne badanych. Do pomiaru ogólnego zadowolenia z życia wykorzystano Skalę Satysfakcji z Życia (SWLS) Dienera i współautorów w adaptacji Juczyńskiego. Wyniki.

Background. The aim of the paper was to assess health-promoting behaviours and life satisfaction among ex-cyclists and to specify the potential relations between them. The study was also to determine if the participants’ age, time of their sports career, and time since sports career completion were related to the life satisfaction of the research group. Material and methods. The study was conducted at the turn of 2016 and 2017 among 51 ex-cyclists: 17 women (33%) and 34 men (67%) aged 22–66 years (average age: 33 years). The Health Behaviour Inventory by Juczyński was used to assess the subjects’ health-promoting behaviours. The Satisfaction with Life Scale by Diener et al. in the Polish adaptation by Juczyński served to measure the general life satisfaction. Results. The majority of the studied group (47.1%) undertook health-promoting behaviours at an average level. There was no statistically significant relationship between particular categories of health-promoting behaviours and the level of life satisfaction. However, statistically significant relationships were observed between life satisfaction and the participants’ age, time of their sports career, and time since sports career completion. Conclusions. The level of life satisfaction increased with age, time of sports career, and time since sports career completion.
