Birdsong is among the most beautiful and complex sounds produced in the natural world. Modern ornithological research into the vocal communication of birds continues to open up new fields of research in neurobiology, ethology and evolutionary biology. Birdsong also fascinates musicographers and musicologists interested in, on the one hand, the presence of birds in music, and, on the other - theoretical questions concerning the ontology, aesthetic qualities and semiotics of birdsong resembling music in some respects. Reflection on this direct, easily accessible and natural sound experience of human beings is the subject of the present article. It is an attempt to answer the question about the source of expression and aesthetic meaning of birdsong for humans, about how bird ‘music’ resonates with the human world. In particular - about whether the expressive meaning of birdsong is embedded and contained in it or whether its source is the listener’s subjective projection.

Pieśni ptasie należą do najpiękniejszych i najbardziej skomplikowanych dźwięków wytwarzanych w świecie naturalnym. Współczesne badania ornitologiczne nad komunikacją wokalną ptaków otwierają wciąż nowe pola badań w dziedzinie neurobiologii, etologii i biologii ewolucyjnej. Pieśń ptaków stanowi także przedmiot fascynacji muzykografów i muzykologów, zainteresowanych z jednej strony obecnością ptaków w muzyce, z drugiej zaś - problematyką teoretyczną dotyczącą ontologii, walorów estetycznych i semiotyki ptasiego śpiewu, pod niektórymi względami przypominających muzykę. Refleksja nad tym bezpośrednim, łatwo dostępnym i naturalnym doświadczeniem dźwiękowym człowieka stanowi temat niniejszego artykułu. Jest on próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, jakie jest źródło ekspresji i estetycznego znaczenia śpiewu ptaków dla człowieka, w jaki sposób ptasia „muzyka” rezonuje ze światem ludzkim. W szczególności zaś - czy ekspresyjne znaczenie pieśni ptasiej jest w niej osadzone i zawarte, czy też jego źródłem pozostaje subiektywna projekcja słuchacza.

A selfie with musical expression in the background is a metaphor. We take a selfie to see a reflection of ourselves. However, the photograph also enables us to see what surrounded us and what we did not really pay attention to. Let us try to capture the essence of expression in such a metaphorical selfie. We will need additional mirrors: a mirror of language and a mirror of music, as well as a strong (logical!) insight into the real manifestations of language (speech and writing) and the real manifestations of music (sounding music – ‘musica sonabilis’ and written music – ‘musica scripta’), into the relations between the manifestations of language and the manifestations of music, and into the differences between them, and finally into what and how they can express (we can express through them).

Selfie z ekspresją muzyczną w tle to metafora. Robimy selfie, żeby zobaczyć odbicie samych siebie. Ale na utrwalonym zdjęciu możemy zobaczyć również to, co nas otaczało, a na co nie zwracaliśmy specjalnie uwagi. Spróbujmy uchwycić w takim metaforycznym selfie istotę ekspresji. Potrzebne będą dodatkowe zwierciadła: zwierciadło języka i zwierciadło muzyki, i mocne (logiczne!) oświetlenie tego, czym są realne przejawy języka (mowa i pismo), a czym realne przejawy muzyki (muzyka rozbrzmiewająca - „musica sonabilis” i muzyka zapisana - „musica scripta”), jakie są związki przejawów języka i przejawów muzyki, a jakie różnice między nimi, i wreszcie, co i jak mogą one (możemy my za ich pośrednictwem) wyrażać.
