Present study is a trail to think about the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick in three dimensions: purposefulness of institution of the sacrament, rediscovering it in the practice of the Church and consciousness of its meaning among modern catholics. The Anointing of the Sick is an element of “sacramental economy” which means new presence of Christ among us in the Church, who acts through sacraments. The purposes of the sacraments are also: the sanctification of man, building of the Church and giving glory to God. Since ages this sacrament has been practiced in the very last moments of human life, which made it “occasional” gracious help and not an effective sign of saving presence of God in the process of human's difficult experiences. Therefore, there is a need of a good mediation of the doctrine in order to explain the essence of the sacrament and to overcome false visions and theories, also those connected with calling it “extreme unction,” What is more, the practice of administering this sacrament to all people of bad health, either physically or mentally, should be emphasized, as well as its ecclesial dimension.

Obecne studium jest próbą spojrzenia na sakrament namaszczenia chorych w trzech wymiarach: celowość ustanowienia sakramentu i jej odkrywanie w praktyce Kościoła oraz świadomość współczesnych katolików dotycząca jego znaczenia. Sakrament namaszczenia jest elementem „ekonomii sakramentalnej”, czyli nowej obecności Chrystusa pośród nas w Kościele, który działa poprzez sakramenty. Celem sakramentów jest jednoczesne uświęcenie człowieka, budowanie Kościoła i oddawanie czci Bogu. Wielowiekowa praktyka z naciskiem na sprawowanie tego sakramentu w ostatnich chwilach ludzkiego życia uczyniła z niego „wydarzeniową” pomoc łaski, a nie skuteczny znak zbawczego towarzyszenia Boga człowiekowi w procesie trudnych doświadczeń. Potrzeba więc dobrego przekazu doktryny w celu wyjaśnienia istoty sakramentu i przezwyciężenia różnych błędnych wizji i teorii związanych również z nazywaniem go „ostatnim namaszczeniem”. Warto też podkreślić stosowność tego sakramentu dla wszystkich będących w trudnej sytuacji zdrowotnej, zarówno w wymiarze chorób cielesnych, jak i psychicznych, a także mocniej uwypuklać eklezjalny wymiar tego sakramentu.

As an introduction, the elaboration shows the biblical roots of the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Further, it presents a short history of its practice from apostolic times during Carolingian Renaissance until the Second Vatican Council. The author of this paper reveals the source of the crisis of understanding of the sacrament. In the final part of the study it presents the interpretation of the Council of Florence and the Council of Trent regarding the sacrament of anointing of the sick and describes the practice after the Council of Trent until the Second Vatican Council.

Jako wprowadzenie w artykule ukazano biblijne źródła sakramentu chorych. Następnie krótko zaprezentowano historię praktyki tegoż sakramentu od czasów apostolskich, poprzez okres renesansu aż do Soboru Watykańskiego II. Autor ukazuje źródła kryzysu rozumienia sakramentu. W końcowej części opracowania zaprezentowano interpretację sakramentu chorych według Soborów Florenckiego i Trydenckiego oraz opisano jego praktykę po Trydencie, aż do Vaticanum II.
