This article focuses on the assessment of the credibility of the witnesses’ testimony. Conway model of autobiographical memory, and the theory of incorrect attribution sources indicates that our memory is based both on the original record of events and on additional information. If the new information is incorrect, the memory may become distorted. In the first part of the article are described mechanisms of autobiographical memory, which can lead to distortions of the original memory trace. The second part are devoted to empirical verification of the hypothesis that the media information distorts the eyewitness memory of an event.

Zniekształcenia pamięci stanowią istotny element w badaniach nad zjawiskami zachodzącymi w pamięci epizodycznej. W przeprowadzonych dwóch eksperymentach pokazano owe zniekształcenia w odniesieniu do materiału werbalnego, jakim był tekst literacki. Wpływ wcześniejszej wiedzy, sposób, w jakim kodowana była informacja - wyobrażeniowy vs pojęciowy - oraz obecność elementów percepcyjnych okazały się istotne dla powstania zjawiska fałszywej pamięci. Ponadto powstawanie zniekształceń analizowane było ze względu na różne możliwości dotarcia do zakodowanych informacji: przypominanie oraz rozpoznawanie. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły na ukazanie, jak odmienne są to sposoby odzyskiwania informacji. Otrzymane rezultaty są zgodne z dotychczasowymi wynikami innych badań koncentrujących się wokół poznania mechanizmów prowadzących do powstawania zniekształceń.

False memories are well-established, episodic memory phenomena. In two experiments, memory distortions were found with regard to verbal material (prose excerpt). The study demonstrated strong influence of prior knowledge on memory for current information. Imaginative and non-imaginative ways of encoding information as well as the presence of perceptual elements were also crucial for creating false memory. Moreover, two different ways of retrieving information were analyzed: recall and recognition. The results are consistent with recent research focused on the mechanisms of memory distortions.
