An assemblage of 71 leather soles dating to the 15th century, discovered during archaeological excavations in Elbląg, was described in detail in terms of size and traces of use (discoloration, compression, abrasion, cracks or fractures not resulting from taphonomic processes). On their basis, an attempt was made to reconstruct size and proportions of the foot structure of the inhabitants of old Elbląg and to estimate intensity and period of use of the footwear. Most of the visible traces probably indicate intensive use and they are associated with a characteristic structure of the human foot, its biomechanics and movement.

Zbiór datowanych na XV wiek 71 skórzanych podeszew odkrytych podczas badań archeologicznych w Elblągu opisano szczegółowo pod względem rozmiarów i śladów użytkowania (przebarwienia, kompresja skóry, otarcia, pęknięcia lub złamania niebędące rezultatem procesów tafonomicznych). Na ich podstawie starano się zrekonstruować wielkość i proporcje budowy stopy dawnych mieszkańców starego Elbląga oraz ocenić intensywność i okres użytkowania obuwia. Prawdopodobnie większość widocznych śladów świadczy o intensywnym użytkowania i wiąże się z charakterystyczną budową stopy ludzkiej oraz jej biomechaniką i ruchem.
