Introduction and aim. Given the potential relationship between oxidative stress and fibromyalgia and well-documented antioxidant efficacy of zinc, the present study aimed to determine serum zinc concentration in FM patients as compared to healthy controls, as well as to identify the correlation of serum zinc concentration with the body mass index (BMI) and sleep quality. Material and methods. In this case-control study, 54 fibromyalgia patients were consecutively recruited between October 01, 2021 and December 01, 2021. The control group consisted of 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Results. Fibromyalgia group had significantly lower zinc concentration, higher body mass index, and lower sleep quality scores as compared to the healthy control group. The correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between serum zinc concentration and body mass index and a significantly positive correlation between serum zinc concentration and sleep quality both in fibromyalgia and healthy control groups. Conclusion. Our results both support the hypothesis that low serum zinc concentration plays a role in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia and indicate that fibromyalgia may lead to weight gain and poor sleep quality, which needs to be confirmed in large-cohort studies.

Introduction. As a Complementary Integrative Practices (CIPs), Lian Gong has been increasingly used in the practice of Physiotherapy. Aim. This study aims to verify the effects of Lian Gong in a patient with fibromyalgia. Description of the case. In this case study the patient (one patient is evaluated) was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 29 years ago and sought care following discontent with previous treatments. Pain intensity was assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS), quality of life with SF-36, and the pressure pain threshold algometer (PPT). There were 16 visits with two weekly 60-minute sessions. When the patient was reevaluated, a Global Perception of Change (GPC) scale was added to assess general health. A folder was submitted to the patient for follow-up of exercises at home and asked to return after 4 weeks (follow-up period). Conclusion. The results indicate improvement in pain, functional capacity and general health. As a first therapy treatment, Lian Gong proved promising results in one case of fibromyalgia. The possible benefits when combined with other forms of care should be explored by clinical trials to expand knowledge of health benefit potential.

Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are frequent in medical, as well as psychotherapeutic practice. This study seeks to answer the question of whether and to what extent psychotherapeutic methods are effective in the treatment of these disorders. Literature search revealed 44 available meta-analyses and reviews. Their results are synthesized separately for (1) MUPS and somatoform disorders, (2) fibromyalgia and chronic pain, (3) irritable bowel syndrome, and (4) chronic fatigue syndrome. It is concluded that psychotherapy is effective in treating psychosomatic disorders. Furthermore, the authors outline possible directions for future research.

Vyhledávání přineslo 44 dostupných metaanalýz a přehledových studií.
