The topic of this article is part of the broader research project on film distribution in the People’s Republic of Poland. An important base for this text is the archival resources of the Film Polski Export and Import Company, established in 1964, the year therefore chosen as the starting point of the analysis. The point of departure is 1975, when important changes in the film import volume occurred. The article comprises of sections dedicated, respectively, to pre-selection of feature films, new releases and films in circulation. The data on the number of released titles show that in almost the entire period under study, the total number of foreign films from other ‘people’s republics’ was lower in any given calendar year than the number of films from capitalist states. However, the fact that more films from communist countries were imported to Poland did not mean that the former had larger audiences and generated greater revenues.

Autor podejmuje w artykule słabo dotąd zbadane zagadnienie cenzury filmów zagranicznych w pierwszej dekadzie Polski Ludowej. We wstępie dokonuje przeglądu piśmiennictwa na temat cenzury filmowej i zwraca uwagę na jej specyfikę w odniesieniu do cenzury filmów polskich. Podkreśla przy tym konieczność komplementarnej analizy informacji pochodzących z Centrali Wynajmu Filmów oraz Głównego Urzędu Kontroli Prasy, Publikacji i Widowisk. Pomiędzy tymi instytucjami – jak wynika z kwerendy w zespole GUKPPiW w Archiwum Akt Nowych – istniał konflikt zogniskowany na działającej przy CWF komisji kwalifikującej filmy zagraniczne. Następnie, bazując na aktach wojewódzkich urzędów cenzury z Poznania i Rzeszowa, autor pokazuje skalę omawianego zjawiska, najwięcej miejsca poświęcając tzw. akcji weryfikacyjnej z 1953 r. oraz działaniom cenzorskim związanym z sytuacją polityczną w ZSRR. W zakończeniu podkreślono rolę cenzury w monitorowaniu reakcji widowni, a także podjęto problem pokazów bezdebitowych.

The article deals with the hitherto poorly researched issue of foreign film censorship in the first decade of People’s Poland. In the introduction, the author draws attention to its specificity in relation to the censorship of Polish films. He emphasises the need for a complementary analysis of information from the Film Rental Office and the Main Office for the Control of Press, Publications, and Public Performances. The conflict between these institutions – as evident from files in the Archive of Modern Records – focused on the committee which qualified foreign films. Then, based on files from regional censorship offices in Poznań and Rzeszów, the author demonstrates the scale of the phenomenon, focusing on the “verification action” of 1953 and censorship activities connected with the political situation in the USSR. The conclusion underlines the role of censorship in monitoring the audience’s reactions and addresses the problem of illegal screenings.
