This research aims to study the application of using films in teaching the Arabic language to Korean students. Recently, level based classes and developing communication skills are becoming important goals in foriegn language education. The most effective way to develop the student’s communication skills is to expose them to real life situations and related resources. Films are replicas of real life situations and thus are effective especially in teaching spoken language. This research implies the following things to Arabic education. First, it is best to provide realistic data to students to improve their communication skills. Selecting films that contain conversations and expressions that are used every day, while avoiding violence or contents of too much slang, will allow students to continuously remain interested and focused. Second, a program that connects films to CD-ROM for textbooks needs to be created. Additionally, there is a need to increase the understanding of spoken language through various study programs for Korean teachers. Finally, using interesting films to motivate students will have positive effects and will allow them to approach Arabic through understanding of the language rather than pure memorization.

The article is an ethnographic essay, which is based on a long-lasting fieldwork conducted in an Italian refugee center. The first part contains basic information on the research project, as well as the presentation of the phenomenon – empowerment – which is the axis of this text. The second part has an innovative form: on the canvas of films watched with refugees, I am conducting the analysis of problems raised by participants.

The article deals with the relation between films and the concept of the national identity. These issues are discussed on the example of Serbian cinema in the 1990s. Using Anthony Smith’s approach to the visual representation of national identity, the ways in which films in Serbia construct national identity is discussed. After that, several films are analyzed that critically question the concept of nationalism. This analysis demonstrates how ideology, in this particular case, nationalistic ideology, at the semantic level can be related to films, one of the most influential segments of popular culture.

The present analysis is focused on the issue of interactions of individuals with mathematics in films and strives to show why the question of the accuracy of mathematical formulas is not crucial to films and, therefore, what their main functions in the creation of the diegetic and the outer world are. In order to achieve the set aim, I ground my reflection in the idea suggested in Math Goes to the Movies, i.e. that mathematics is not presented in films only as an abstract theory, but it also carries a creative potential. Good Will Hunting (1997), A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Pi (1998) are the films in which mathematics is a substantial driving force, influencing both the gradual development and consolidation of characters. In this work, the films serve as the research material.

In my paper I have concentrated on the negative aspects of globalization and have examined them in the films created in English-speaking countries, The United States of America and the United Kingdom. Based on the analysis of the following films, (Gury Burns, Waydowntown 2000), TV series (The Apprentice, 2003–6, TV documentary series), Wall Street (Oliver Stone, 1987) Bigger than Enron (Marc Shaffer, 2002), Darwin’s Nightmare (Hubert Sauper: 2004) and The Future of Food (Deborah Koons Garcia, 2005), I have concluded that although globalization is considered one of the most awe-inspiring phenomena both in economy and culture, it has also created negative indices, such as victimization of human subjects as unsuspecting targets of globalization.

W moim eseju koncentruje się na negatywnych aspektach globalizacji wyraźnie pokazanych w filmach pochodzących z krajów anglosaskich: Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki oraz Wielkiej Brytanii. W oparciu o analizę następujących filmów, (Gury Burns, Waydowntown 2000), TV series (The Apprentice, 2003–6), TV documentary series, Wall Street (Oliver Stone, 1987) Bigger than Enron (Marc Shaffer, 2002), Darwin's Nightmare (Hubert Sauper: 2004) and The Future of Food (Deborah Koons Garcia, 2005). Wyciągam wniosek, że globalizacja stworzyła negatywne zjawiska szczególnie w zakresie traktowania jednostek ludzkich. Mimo że globalizacja uważana jest za zjawisko pozytywne w ekonomii oraz w kulturze (szczególnie jeśli chodzi o rozpowszechnianie zjawisk kulturowych na całym globie ziemskim), traktuje ona jednostki ludzkie w sposób stereotypowy i bezduszny. Bohaterzy wyżej wymienionych filmów nie są pokazani jako indywidualne charaktery ale raczej jako przedstawiciele bezosobowej i stereotypowo traktowanej masy ludzkiej.

Artykuł prezentuje narzędzia i metody do badania nowych mediów. Autor opisuje programy stworzone przez nowy nurt w nauce zwany humanistyką cyfrową. Główną tezą jest stwierdzenie, że największym problemem współczesnego medioznawstwa jest badanie wielkich kolekcji danych – czyli big data. W artykule przedstawione nowe sposoby badania filmów na przykładzie analizy Gwiezdnych wojen. Główną metodą interpretacji i prezentacji wyników badań była wizualizacja.

The article presents the tools and methods for the study of new media. The author describes the programs created by the new trend in science called digital humanities. The main thesis is that the biggest problem of the contemporary media studies is the study of the great collection of data – which is the big date. In the article presented new ways to study films on the example of analysis of Star Wars. The main method of interpretation and presentation of research results was the visualization.

The close relationship between visual arts and work issues has a long tradition in the world. At the beginning of the 20th century, first mass-produced photos were used in the fight for rights of people working in American factories. Nowadays, visual art forms like photos or films not only encourage discussion of working conditions, but also illustrate the work itself – documenting both new and disappearing professions for future generations. The article presents an example of the use of artistic competitions and acquired photos and videos – topic: work – to broadly promote the project INFODORADCA+ and its products

The article focuses on the phenomenon of historical memory in Spain and the proces of its recovery. The author chose cinema as a medium for passing memory and presented three movies, that refer to the period of Spanish Civil War and Franco’s regime: ¡Ay, Carmela! by Carlos Saura, La hora de los valientes by Antonio Mercero and La hora de los valientes by José Luís Cuerda. A characteristic feature of those films is nostalgia for the lost paradise embodied by the Second Republic and repugnance for Franco’s regime. They also reflect dominant conviction about Spain divided into two opposing worlds where communication is impossible. There is a clear tendency to divide the memory and history in Spain into black and white and people into just and unjust depending on their attitude towards the regime of Franco. We can observe that especially one memory in Spanish cinema is highlighted – the memory of the republicans

This article presents some results of research in multimedia translation especially in the field of French-German contrastive description of film-subtitles. Our analysis is based on original dialogues and scripts of some of most popular films about the life in French suburbs; the transcriptions will be compared with the subtitled versions in German and in any cases with the dubbing-text. We aim to study the use of expressive and affective idioms in the French dialogs and their translational solutions chosen by the translators. Are discussed the ritual use of phraseological units like swear-words/maledictions, idioms of invectiveness and offences, verbal slanders but also specially connotated interjections and forms/terms of address to clarify their significations and functions. Adequate translation of this type of expressions is very important for the respect of the “aim” of those films.

L’article présente les résultats des recherches dans le domaine de la traduction multimédia, en particulier ceux de la description contrastive du sous-titrage franco-allemand. Dans les analyses, nous sommes parti des dialogues originaux et des scénarios de quelques films français sur la banlieue parisienne. Les transcriptions sont comparées avec les versions allemandes sous-titrées. Dans certains cas, les versions doublées sont également considérées. L’objectif visé est d’étudier l’usage des expressions idiomatiques, expressives et affectives dans les textes français et de les comparer avec les « équivalents » choisis par les traducteurs. Il s’agit notamment de l’usage rituel des unités phraséologiques, telles les injures, insultes, jurons/formules juratoires, calomnies et gros mots ainsi que les interjections et termes d’adresse connotés, dont sont analysées les significations et les fonctions. La traduction adéquate de ce type de phrasèmes et d’expressions revêt une importance décisive pour rendre justice à « l’âme » de ces films.
