The main theme of this article is the problem of the fine arts in the poetry of Józef Czechowicz, as well as description, analysis and interpretation of references to paintings and drawings in his poetry. There are two concepts which describe connection between poetry and art – hypotýpōsis and ékphrasis. The fine arts usually stimulate artists. Czechowicz’s writings are visually evocative. Some of his poems were written under the influence of paintings by Louis Marcoussis. Marcoussis was a French painter born in Poland in 1878. His works are related to Symbolism, Impressionism, Cubism, Italian „Pittura metafisica” and Surrealism. Another artist whose works were important to Czechowicz was Marc Chagall. It is possible to find some similarities between Chagall’s paintings and Czechowicz’s poems. The analogies are visible in similar ways of creating the images by the two artists. There are also some references to the art of icon creating in the poetry of Czechowicz, but there is only one ékphrasis – the poem iliada tętni. Czechowicz was not a type of an art admirer who contemplates paintings. The fine arts were for him a source of inspiration as they could supplement his language and improve the quality of his works.
