This paper discusses the views on pragmatic subjects explicitly mentioned or implied in Bosnian folk proverbs. For the purposes of the research, three collections of proverbs were analyzed: Narodno blago by M. K. Ljubušak (1887), Na nebu paučina by V. Gunić (1999) and Krajiške izreke i poslovice by A. Sijamhodžić (2017). In these collections many proverbs that deal with pragmatic subjects are recorded. Such proverbs are cited and commented upon in the central part of the paper. They mostly refer to the effects of language use, language as a sign of personality or identity, appropriateness, indirectness, politeness, speech acts (primarily promises, advice and compliments) and co-operation (Grice’s Cooperative Principle, its maxims, and hedges).

The objective of the article is to make an analysis of the lubok writings, which orthography differed not just from the orthography of the Russian Literature Language but also from the Church Slavonic orthography. The analysis of “The Story of Joseph the Beautiful” initially printed in the standard civil orthography and later reprinted in the lubok version, provides an opportunity to trace back the ways of orthography adaptation. The comparison of this orthography system with other lubok texts lets us claim that a number of orthography peculiarities is distinctive for the considerable amount of lubok texts serving as an orthography hallmark of lubok writings. The peculiarities in question date back to the manuscript tradition of the XVII century and serve as the elements providing systemic unity for lubok writings.

This article belongs to folk linguistics. I have a query which includes ca. 300 informants. In standard Finnish, the 3. person pronoun “hän” refers to a human being (both female and male), and “se” to an animal, a thing, or an abstract idea. Nevertheless, these expressions are not typically used in all traditional folk dialects or in the actual colloquial language, as above. In my query, I want to get answers to the question, in which situations language users believe that they use the pronoun “hän” referring to a human being. According to the answers, informants are chiefly using “hän” in formal situations, and the pronoun “se” in everyday situations. This can be confusing for students learning Finnish as a second language. Some informants claim that they are using the pronoun “hän” because of politeness, or to the contrary, sarcastically, negatively or humorously. In these answers, the choice of pronouns is not neutral, but context-dependent. In folk linguistic query, it appears that the speakers don’t normally know how they actually are using words in reality. In order to reveal the real use it would be beneficial to compare our results to recorded spoken Finnish from authentic situations. An important research question would be, whether it is neutral to use the pronoun “hän” in general.

This article presents modes of folk-linguistic awareness as defined by Dennis R. Preston, who first introduced them to American folk linguistics in the 90. of the past century. These modes are as follows: overt availability of language phenomena that are being commented, the degree of the opinion’s accuracy, the level of the specificity of folk knowledge, and the ability to control language varieties. The essential feature of the modes is that – unlike typical linguistic awareness research tools that help to analyze the layers and levels of language awareness – they allow the study of the ways in which the linguistic awareness of the averagelanguage user, so-called language layman, is revealed. In Polish studies on linguistic awareness, these determinants have not been described and used, although they present new possibilities for research explication. In this article, the explanations of Dennis R. Preston’s concept are partly based on the examples used by the researcher in his publications, and partly on comparable examples, but coming from Polish linguistic sources that include linguistic examples excerpted among the Polish ethnic group in Canada. The paper also presents the relationships between the modes of folk-linguistic awareness which are illustrated graphically. A preliminary diagnosis of the suitability of the characterized determinants in research on the linguistic awareness of Polish speakers invites in-depth studies to what extent these relatively objective tools may turn out to be useful in the analyses of the modes by which the linguistic awareness of social groups is revealed.

Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia wyznaczniki tzw. potocznej świadomości językowej według koncepcji Dennisa R. Prestona, który jako pierwszy wprowadził je do amerykańskiej szkoły lingwistyki potocznej w latach 90. ubiegłego wieku. Wyróżniki te to: eksplicytna dostępność zakresu zjawisk językowych podlegających ocenie, stopień trafności tej oceny, poziom jej szczegółowości oraz umiejętność kontrolowania różnych wariantów języka. Zasadniczą cechą tych wykładników jest to, że – w odróżnieniu od typowych narzędzi do badań nad świadomością językową, które analizują warstwy i poziomy świadomości – pozwalają one na badanie sposobów, w jakie ujawnia się świadomość przeciętnego użytkownika języka, tzw. językoznawczego laika. W rodzimych badaniach fenomenu świadomości językowej wyznaczniki te nie były dotychczas opisywane i wykorzystywane, chociaż prezentują nowe możliwości eksplikacji badawczej. W niniejszym artykule do charakterystyki koncepcji Dennisa R. Prestona posłużono się częściowo przykładami użytymi przez samego badacza, a częściowo odwołano się do przykładów porównywalnych, ale pochodzących ze źródeł rodzimych, w tym egzemplifikacji językowych ekscerpowanych wśród polskiej grupy etnicznej w Kanadzie. W artykule przedstawiono również relacje między wyznacznikami potocznej świadomości językowej, które zilustrowano w sposób graficzny. Wstępna diagnoza dotycząca zdatności charakteryzowanych wyróżników w studiach nad świadomością językową użytkowników polszczyzny zachęca do pogłębionych analiz, w jakiej mierze te – względnie zobiektywizowanie – narzędzia mogą okazać się przydatne do badań nad sposobami, przez które ujawnia się świadomość językowa grup społecznych.

So-called folk linguistics, i.e. folk beliefs concerning language, may be a valuable source of information for various linguistic fields and for practical applications, e.g. in teaching practice. The author presents an analysis of folk linguistics as it can be reconstructed from Internet discussions by Czechspeaking women (especially mothers). The results show that the folk theory of language and its use is quite complex, with multiple connections to a scientific theory of language (probably acquired through school education) and with important evaluative features (including e.g. folk theories of correctness and errors). The author proposes a new Czech term (laická jazykověda) and suggests that the theory should be seen as dynamic (e.g. changing over time and during speakers’ lives) and structured (e.g. consisting of a centre and peripheries and containing several “layers” of shared sub-theories).
