This study discusses different approaches to alcohol in textbooks for teaching foreign languages (English, Spanish, Russian, Polish) on a beginner level (A1). In a broader context, the article deals with the cultural content and evaluation of foreign language course books. At the outset, the materials for foreign language teaching have been investigated with a frame of content analysis, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative analysis reveals that alcohol occurs in varying levels in the textbooks – from complete absence in some to 118 references in one textbook. Alcohol appears in Polish and Russian textbooks to a greater extent than in English and Spanish. Moreover, the paper suggests that the common feature of the books is a higher tolerance towards beer and wine than to spirits. In the second part of the study, based on the qualitative descriptions, three approaches towards presenting alcohol in the course books are discussed: tabooing, cautionary treatment and an affirmative approach. Additionally, this study discusses that in Slavic course books alcohol might also be introduced because of linguistic reasons (grammatical and phonetic).

In this paper we deal with identities portrayed in a Czech textbook of English as a foreign language Time to Talk. The main goal of the paper is to describe various aspects of the portrayed identities and the ways of restricting interpretation of cultural content in texts and tasks. Firstly, we discuss the concept of identity in foreign language teaching and identity research in foreign language textbooks. We employ the method of content analysis, critical discourse analysis and the concept of open and closed texts to capture the image of the target language community depicted in the textbook. In an analysis of texts, illustrations and associated tasks we demonstrate that the textbook reflects the current intercultural discourse, which involves the presentation and confrontation of diverse cultures, however, we point to the dominant role of British culture and the authority of British native speakers. The portrayed characters are members of the ethnic majority, middle to upper social class, and they are often depicted in a gender-stereotypical manner. Nevertheless, there is an apparent influence of the discourse of cultural incorporation, which means that formerly underrepresented groups are granted space in the textbook.

This paper aims to analyse the elements of gender ideology and neo-liberal ideology in a corpus composed of three Italian and two Serbian as a foreign language textbooks. The focus of the study is centered on the representation of activities related to the purchase of clothes and accessories, analysed from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. The results indicate that neoliberal values are sustained through the idea that women are naturally predisposed to be clothes and fashion consumers. On a broader scale, the results implicate that the educational materials taken into examination lack a critical pedagogy approach, and that they do not employ the critical and the transformative potential of education, instead they are limited to the reproduction of dominant ideologies.
