This paper is about some selected interlinked issues, addressed in The Pension Review, concerning functioning and reforms of the Polish pension system in comparative perspective. The challenges reformers are facing in different countries are similar as well as the fields and methods of the reforms. In many countries the reforms concern the retirement age, indexation, minimum guarantees and supplementary pension schemes. The analysis of these reforms indicates that among the two main functions of pension system: fighting poverty in the old age and allowing for continuation of the previous living standard only the former one is to be realized sufficiently.

Głównym przekazem tego artykułu jest stwierdzenie, że w świetle badań porównawczych systemy emerytalne podlegają modyfikacjom właśnie pod wpływem znaczących przeobrażeń ekonomicznych i społecznych w obecnej dobie w kierunku, który społecznie może być trudny do zaakceptowania, ponieważ wiąże się z ograniczeniem hojności świadczeń.
