While biobanks constitute an indispensable source of scientific data, they also generate many concerns related to the ethical, legal and social aspects of acquiring and storing of human biological material, particularly when it comes to the matters of privacy and confidentiality of data and commercialization of research results. It is important as social perception of biobanking may have a bigger impact on the donors than real scientific achievements, while negative images of biobanks may negatively influence the readiness to donate. This, in turn, may impede the functioning of biobanks. Thus, the aim of this paper is to describe the main social anxieties related to gathering and usage of human biological material. Beginning with the concept of geneticization, the paper will tackle the most important social concerns regarding biobanking: creation of a unique genohype, geneticization of diagnostics and identity, the risk of genetic discrimination and commercialization of genetics and gene patenting.

Jednym z symptomów nowoczesności jest dekonstrukcja tożsamości jako kategorii stabilnej i danej obiektywnie, co sprawia, że jednostki zostają pozbawione stałych odniesień, a tożsamość staje się czymś płynnym: wymaga ciągłego (re)konstruowania i (re)negocjowania. U niektórych jednostek może to powodować zwrot ku genetyce, która dla wielu staje się źródłem upodmiotowienia. Fakt, że genom przypisuje się odpowiedzialność za wiele chorób, zachowań i cech osobowości, wzmacnia esencjalne myślenie o tożsamości człowieka, która ponownie zyskuje zakorzenienie w biologii człowieka. Genetyzacja tożsamości umożliwia bowiem konstrukcję własnego ja jako „ja genetycznego”. Celem tekstu jest ukazanie, jak obecna w dyskursie genetycznym retoryka tożsamości kształtuje esencjalne myślenie o człowieku na trzech poziomach: indywidualnym, wspólnotowym i gatunkowym. Analizując trojakiego rodzaju źródła: publikacje prasowe i naukowe oraz materiały promocyjne firm biotechnologicznych świadczących usługi z zakresu medycyny personalizowanej, podejmuję próbę ukazania, że myślenie w kategoriach genetycznego esencjalizmu nie jest zjawiskiem generowanym wyłącznie przez media, a w proces genetyzacji tożsamości zaangażowanych jest wielu różnych aktorów, którzy wspólnie przyczyniają się do wykreowania nad- miernego szumu medialnego wokół genetyki. Celem pobocznym jest zwrócenie uwagi na społeczne implikacje genetyzacji tożsamości.

One of the symptoms of modernity is deconstruction of identity understood as a solid and objective category. Consequently, as individuals lack points of firm reference, identity itself becomes fluid: it requires permanent (re)construction and (re) negotiation. For some individuals, this may result in a turn towards genetics, which for many becomes a source of empowerment. Because genes are ascribed responsibility for many diseases, behaviours and personality traits, essentialist thinking about human identity is reinforced, which again becomes rooted in human biology. Thus, geneticization of identity makes a construction of one’s self as ‘genetic self’ possible. This paper aims to describe how the rhetoric of identity that is present in genetic discourse shapes the essentialist thinking about human being on three levels: the individual, the collective and the species. By analyzing three types of sources (press articles, scientific papers and advertising materials from biotechnological companies which offer personalized genetics services), I will show that thinking in terms of genetic essentialism is not generated solely by the media and that there are many other actors who are engaged in the process of geneticization of identity. This article concludes with a brief discussion of the social implications of geneticization of identity.
