The article presents the character and activity of Antoni Alojzy Gąsiorowski, editor, publisher, bookseller, issuer and printer operating chiefly in Masuria. Born to a Polish family, initially acted to the benefit of Poland and national identity. Later on, due to economic and personal reasons, he changed his attitude and became a livid supporter of germanisation. Hefocused his publishing activity on books and journals issued both in Polish and German. Undoubtedly, his greatest editorial achievement was the "Kurek Mazurski", in German "Der masurische Hahn", issued at first in Szczytno, then in Jańsbork (now Pisz) as a result of moving the publishing house. Despite his actions, Gąsiorowski may be seen as an advocate of the Polish identity in Masuria; the works he published, though written in poor Polish, acted to the benefit of popularising the Polish language among local inhabitants of Masuria.

The article deals with the problem of cultural security with regard to Polish – German relations in the Prussian partition zone since theen do ftheeighte enth century till the beginning of the twentieth century. Author in his analysisrefers tone whist orical approach which is now a day sgaining momentum intheb security studies. He applies it with regard to interpretation of germ ani sation policy conducted by Prussian authorities in Polish territories annexed by the Hohenzollern monarchy during partitions. This period was marked by the ongoing efforts of Prussian policy makers toundermine essential elements of Polish cultural security in terms of stabilizing and perpetuating Polish cultural code which was to be hampered by the wholeset of measures (germanisation of schools, restrictions against Polish landowner sand Polish Catholic clergy, censorship). Due to the Polish self – modernisationefforts (so called organic movement) this policy against Polish cultural security failed to achieve its strategic goal, i. e. the full integration (Verschmelzung) of Polish inhabitants into there sof the Prussian state.
