In the article, the author tries to establish a new language for imaging the complex process of identification in adolescent girls in Terakowska’s work (especially in Lustro Pana Grymsa) in the light of girlhood studies. She revises the male-centered theories of Lacanian views on the child’s identity, the concept of “becoming-girl” of Pierre Péju, the mythopoetic reflection of Joseph Campbell, and contemporary feminist concepts on female identity (Lasara Allen, Pinkola Estés, Maureen Murdock). The subject’s analysis led her to conclude that analyzing Terakowska’s work can contribute to developing the “girl-method”. Terakowska constructs an uncanny way of thinking about “becoming-a-girl”, where she redefines the female archetype Femella – the divine girl and introduces the patterns of adolescent identity development in girls, which the author calls the second phase of the Mirror Stage.

The aim of the article is to answer the question of how girls could have agency in interwar Tarnów. The analysis of discourses framing how these girls functioned was preceded by an attempt to define the social structure and its transformations in the city between the wars. The source base included selected issues of periodicals published in Tarnów at the time, concerning local issues, school protocols, as well as statistical data and personal documents. The research adopted a microhistorical perspective and focused on selected aspects of everyday life. Girlhood studies constituted the methodological framework. Although the world of traditional values played an enormous role in shaping the life choices of girls and young women in interwar Tarnów, it is noticeable that girls from different groups increasingly expanded their scope of autonomy. Their agency was mainly manifested in micro-activities, while the processes of democratisation and individualisation were a significant context.

Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób dziewczęta międzywojennego Tarnowa mogły być sprawcze. Analizę dyskursów określających ramy funkcjonowania dziewcząt, poprzedziła próba określenia struktury społecznej i jej przemian w międzywojennym mieście. Bazę źródłową stanowiły wybrane numery czasopism wydawanych w międzywojennym Tarnowie i dotyczących spraw lokalnych, protokoły szkolne, a także dane statystyczne oraz egodokumenty. W badaniach przyjęto perspektywę mikrohistoryczną i skoncentrowano się na wybranych aspektach życia codziennego. Ramę metodologiczną stanowiły studia nad dziewczętami (girlhood studies). Jakkolwiek w międzywojennym Tarnowie olbrzymią rolę w kształtowaniu wyborów życiowych dziewcząt i młodych kobiet nadal odgrywał świat wartości tradycyjnych, wyraźnie widać, że dziewczęta z różnych środowisk i warstw w coraz większym zakresie poszerzały pole autonomii. Sprawczość ich przejawiała się głównie w mikrodziałaniach, a istotnym kontekstem były procesy demokratyzacji i indywidualizacji.
