Podocytes play an important role in glomerular function. Together with endothelial cells of the glomerular capillary loop and the glomerular basement membrane they form a filtration barrier. Podocytes cooperate with mesangial cells to support the structure and function of the glomerulus. Podocytes injury is observed in primary glomerulonephritis associated with proteinuria. Structural and functional analysis of nephron is an essential part of research in renal diseases.

Podocyty odgrywają ważną rolę w prawidłowym funkcjonowaniu kłębuszka nerkowego. Oprócz komórek śródbłonka pętli włośniczkowej i kłębuszkowej błony podstawnej wchodzą w skład bariery filtracyjnej. Współdziałając z komórkami mezangialnymi stabilizują strukturę kłębuszka. Uszkodzenie podocytów obserwuje się w pierwotnych kłębuszkowych zapaleniach nerek przebiegających z białkomoczem. Analiza struktury i funkcji nefronu stanowi istotny element badań nad patogenezą chorób nerek.
