The subjects were 134 final-year students of Warsaw Medical University, 1st Faculty of Medicine. The purpose of the study was to measure the dominant coping strategy, moderated by positive and negative emotions, which can be important in management. The variance analysis showed that activation of negative emotions resulted in a significant rise in emotion-oriented and avoidance-oriented coping. At the same time, the level of a task-oriented strategy decreased significantly, which seems to be very important in healthcare management.

The aim of this paper was to present the results of an evaluation of the effect of knowledge-oriented management and level of information technology on the operational effectiveness in Polish hospitals. The data were collected using a questionnaire survey carried out among managers in Polish hospitals. Structural modelling was employed to analyse the data collected. The structural model proposed in the study turned out to fit the data very well, thus demonstrating the positive and cause-and-effect correlations between the level of IT, knowledge-oriented management and operational effectiveness in Polish hospitals.

Objectives: The global crisis, which the outbreak of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic undoubtedly is, has forced healthcare facilities to implement a variety of sanitary procedures. These have strongly affected the staff, contributing to decreased work motivation and occasional refraining from work caused by the threat of infection. The purpose of this study was to assess the human resource management practices implemented by the managers at the Rymanow Health Resort in the first two months after the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak had been declared. Research Design & Methods: The study used the direct interview method (PAPI) and inference based on participatory observation. The respondents were medical workers employed in the health resort hospital and rehabilitation centre. 96% of the respondents participated in the PAPI survey, which is over 70% of the surveyed population. Participatory observation data was obtained from a member of the management of the healthcare facility. Findings: The respondents pointed to their increased and changed workload. Despite concerns about their own health and life, only one-third of the employees used various forms of refraining from work during the pandemic. The vast majority of the respondents positively assessed the actions taken by the employer in the first two months after the Polish government had declared the state of emergency. Implications / Recommendations: The main resource that is crucial for the success of the organisation delivering healthcare services is the employees, as it is them who design and utilise solutions, create organisations, and actively participate in their functioning. With regard to the employees of institutions providing healthcare services, ensuring security in work environment is paramount due to the units’ responsibility for the achievement of public interest and the administration of public funding. This is why it is so important for the employers to take action to create a friendly work environment, which is absolutely necessary for the healthcare sector to accomplish its mission. Contribution / Value Added: The results led to the formulation of the thesis that the procedures implemented by the employer yielded measurable effects, as employees decided to stay in their workplaces despite the risks posed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The article discusses the sources of medical entities’ financing, with particular emphasis on the issues related to the remuneration of their employees. The characteristics of remuneration as a motivational element, but also cost and revenue element in the relations between the employing enterprise and the employee obliged to perform work, were carried out. Based on the analysis, it was noted that in order to be competitive in acquiring new employees, health centers employing e.g. doctors are forced to seek additional sources to finance their wages. These sources are usually cash funds of entities statutorily creating health centers, i.e. local government units.

Healthcare workers are representatives of occupations that are most exposed to high levels of stress in the work environment. These characteristics of work increase the probability of suffering from mental disorders. One aspect of mental disorder prevention in the workplace is the role of healthcare managers as those people who are responsible for minimizing the negative impact of work-related stress factors. Their role can be performed by creating effective initiatives supporting workers’ mental health. The need to support the implementation of such initiatives has been highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the review is to summarize available types of managerial interventions in the field of mental health protection of medical staff, considering the assessment of their prevalence, determinants of effectiveness, and limitations from the perspective of healthcare managers. The article was prepared based on the literature review method and covered publications from original research in English and Polish, published until June 2023 in the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. In addition to the original research, the review also includes documents developed by international health organizations. The determinants of effective managerial interventions that can be used for the needs of managers and decision-makers in the field of mental health management in the workplace have been presented. The greatest widespread of mental health initiatives concerned the pandemic period, but now the key systemic task should be to maintain the frequency of impacts outside the pandemic period, due to the constant nature of stressors. The determinants of their effectiveness include, among others: incorporating elements of psychological knowledge into the process of educating managers, involving healthcare specialists in the development of programs, and examining the needs of the staff each time at the stage preceding interventions.

Cost estimation is crucial for health accounts analyses in both developed and developing countries. This study aimed to determine a methodology on the issue of costing systems and costing methods applicable to all health services carried out on a large scale that by their nature have a limited variability of resources (time, materials, human resources, etc.). The authors used time-driven activitybased costing (TDABC). The average time of healthcare activities was estimated within the direct observation of the activities and interviews in a paediatric radiology service unit. Direct and indirect costs were calculated regarding the price per minute for each health service category. TDABC allows calculating the actual costs of radiology services. This method reveals a higher expenditure than that reimbursed by the national health service. The empirical study shows high costs for CT and Thoracic spine radiology under sedation, which the national health system does not take into consideration. TDABC can be used by healthcare managers to evaluate the level of costs and to compare the internal results with the reimbursement tariffs from the national health service.
