The aim of the article is to discuss the reasons why Nicolaus Copernicus, who was studying law in Bologna, in 1500 went to Rome with his brother Andrzej. In the first part, sources relating directly to the stay of the Copernicus brothers in the Eternal City were presented and analysed. In the second part, the author discusses various motivations that could have prompted the scholars of Toruń to visit Rome (the desire to see monuments and become acquainted with the intellectual atmosphere of the city; to earn money and gain experience in the legal profession; to obtain jubilee indulgences and visit holy sites).

Celem artykułu jest omówienie powodów, dla jakich Mikołaj Kopernik odbywający studia prawnicze w Bolonii udał się do Rzymu w 1500 roku wraz ze swoim bratem Andrzejem. W pierwszej części zostały przedstawione i poddane krytyce źródła mówiące bezpośrednio o pobycie braci Koperników w Wiecznym Mieście; w drugiej zaś autor omawia różne motywacje, które mogły skłonić toruńskich scholarów do podróży nad Tyber (chęć zobaczenia zabytków i zapoznania się z intelektualną atmosferą miasta; pragnienie zarobienia pieniędzy i zdobycia doświadczenia w zawodzie prawniczym; chęć uzyskania odpustu jubileuszowego i odwiedzenia miejsc świętych).

In the common opinion of the classicists Polybios’ Historiae are considered to be an extremely reliable source for the reconstruction of the Republican Roman army organization. The problem is he did not have the declared military experience, but also did not always describe what he actually saw. In the sixth book of Historiae there are some ideal-type suggestions which are the legacy of a specific literary genre called tactica. Polybios was one of the authors of this kind of military treaties. What is more, in the other fragments of his work he committed an archaization, presenting the image of the Roman armed forces probably from the fourth century BC. All this makes that uncritical taking of his arguments may lead to distortions in the image of the studied subject.

W powszechnym mniemaniu badaczy antyku Historiae autorstwa Polybiosa uchodzą za wyjątkowo wiarygodne źródło do rekonstrukcji organizacji republikańskiej armii rzymskiej. Problem polega na tym, że nie tylko nie posiadał on deklarowanego doświadczenia wojskowego, ale również nie zawsze opisywał to, co miał okazję zaobserwować. W treści VI księgi jego dzieła znajdują się wywody o charakterze modelowym, co stanowi spuściznę specyficznego gatunku literackiego nazywanego tactica. Polybios był autorem traktatu zaliczanego do tego nurtu. Co więcej, w innych fragmentach swego dzieła dopuścił się archaizacji, przedstawiając obraz rzymskich sił zbrojnych prawdopodobnie z IV wieku przed Chr. Wszystko to sprawia, że bezkrytyczne powielanie jego wywodów może doprowadzić do zniekształcenia obrazu badanego zjawiska.
