Finding unknown archival materials referring to the foundation of the Society for Opening and Maintaining Public Libraries in Białystok of 1907 as well as its functioning, and also the printed version of the status of the Society, allowed us to review the issue of the origins of public libraries in Białystok. The article is an attempt at a more specific reconstruction of the circumstances of the Society’s foundation and its functioning before 1915 on the basis of new historical sources.

Odnalezienie nieznanych materiałów archiwalnych dotyczących założenia Towarzystwa Otwierania i Utrzymywania Bibliotek Publicznych w Białymstoku z 1907 r. oraz jego funkcjonowania, a także drukowanej wersji statutu tego Towarzystwa, pozwoliło na ponowne przyjrzenie się zagadnieniu początków bibliotekarstwa publicznego w Białymstoku. Artykuł ten stanowi próbę bardziej szczegółowej rekonstrukcji okoliczności powstania Towarzystwa i jego funkcjonowania przed 1915 r. na podstawie nowych źródeł historycznych.
