Archival holdings of Polish banks were largely destroyed during World War II. This applies primarily to those banks that had their headquarters in Warsaw. In other banking centres: Łódź, Poznań, Lviv and Vilnius, the situation looks better. Central banks and large public banks usually left behind archival records. When it comes to private banks, archival holdings of audit institutions are invaluable: The Banking Commissioner's Office of the Ministry of Treasury and the National Fund for Assistance to Credit Institutions located at Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. Both collections focus more on those institutions that got into trouble than on those that were solid. For their part, the banks were not interested in revealing their problems. The annual reports published in print (under the banking law) have not been preserved to any considerable extent. They were not within the scope of interest of either archives or libraries. Such nature of both the legacy of the Polish banking archives and the state of its preservation requires application of a specific critical apparatus for its use as a source.

Zasoby archiwalne banków polskich zostały w znacznym stopniu zniszczone podczas II wojny światowej. Dotyczy to przede wszystkim tych banków, które miały siedziby w Warszawie. W innych ośrodkach bankowości: w Łodzi, Poznaniu, we Lwowie i w Wilnie sytuacja wygląda lepiej. Banki centralne i duże banki publiczne zazwyczaj pozostawiły po sobie zespoły archiwalne. W przypadku banków prywatnych nieocenione są zasoby archiwalne instytucji kontrolnych: Komisariatu Bankowego Ministerstwa Skarbu i ulokowanego w Banku Gospodarstwa Krajowego Funduszu Pomocy Instytucjom Kredytowym. Oba zbiory więcej uwagi poświęcają tym instytucjom, które wpadły w tarapaty niż tym, które były solidne. Banki ze swej stron nie były zainteresowane ujawnianiem własnych problemów. W niewielkim stopniu zachowały się też publikowane drukiem (na mocy prawa bankowego) sprawozdania roczne. Nie znalazły się one w zasięgu zainteresowań ani archiwów, ani bibliotek. Taki charakter zarówno spuścizny archiwalnej bankowości polskiej, jak i stanu jej zachowania, wymaga stosowania specyficznego aparatu krytycznego przy jej źródłowym wykorzystaniu.
