Authors of the essay have attempted, based on ego-documents, to reveal the borderlines of the discrepancy between the expected standard of intensity and duration of the Austro-Prussian conflict and the subsequent reality. One of the 19th-century modernizing processes condensed in the short and intense clash in the summer of 1866 when in consequence of increased density of the traffic infrastructure and the introduction of new communication and infrastructure networks, the world seemed ‘smaller’ and ‘faster’. The essay brings an analysis of the period discourse that the authors understand not only as a frame within which memories and events were performed, but also as a product of mnemonic processes.

The article addresses the semantic relations of Rudkovsky, a modern playwright, with Chekhov’s comedies. The self-consciousness of a person in Chekhov’s drama is directly connected with the historic memory, and this idea is interpreted in Rudkovsky’s works through the theatrical experiment, allowing the actresses to go through war as a personal experience, and for the audience – to set right “the joint” of time.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is world-renown for its documen- taries and animations. This article examines how the NFB dealt with one specific topic – the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War Two. By analyzing the films produced by the NFB between 1945 and 2018, this study seeks to understand how and why its narratives of the internment changed dramatically over three-quarters of a century. The study deals with six NFB films: Of Japanese Descent (1945), Enemy Alien (1975), Minoru: Memory of Exile (1992), Freedom Has a Price (1994), Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story (2003), and East of the Rockies (2018). Drawing on the postcolonial concepts of the colonizing gaze and hegemony, as well as poststructuralist concepts of the trace and discourses of power, it probes the evolution of the NFB’s cinematic culture and concludes that the NFB’s film legacy parallels a changing public discourse in Canada on this traumatic historical violation of human rights.

The present article is aimed at demonstrating the importance of new for Ukrainian historiography direction of public history, for the country’s development and for strengthening its stance at the international arena. Australia is taken for an example, as it has turned from once remote Terra Incognita into one of the leading nations of the modern world. It is emphasized that, regardless of attainments, the identity issue is still as urgent as to other countries in the conditions of a global crisis. The sources of the public history trend are revealed, explained are the factors conducive to its spread planet-wise, attention is brought to the fact that this trend has become a natural result of developments in the science of history in the Western civilization, encompassing countries of Europe, the Americas, and Australia. The latter, being a ramification of the Western civilization branch, has adopted the guidelines outlined by American scholars, driven by pragmatic considerations. Steps are determined in the institutionalization of the said direction, a characteristic is given to the activities of the Australian Center of Public History at Sydney Technology University, of the journal “Public History Survey”, as well as to the specifics of their work in the digital era under the motto: “History for the public, about the public, together with the public”. The same motto is leading the historians working with local and family history, cooperating with the State in the field of commemoration, placing great importance on museums, memorials, monuments. Considering national holidays, particular attention is given to the National Day of Apology, reflecting the complications of Australian history. Like American public history, the Australian one began to give much attention to those groups of population that were previously omitted by the focus of research, namely, the aborigines. A conclusion is made regarding the importance of history in general and public history in particular for the implementation of the national identity policy – an important token of the nation’s stable and successful progress.

Пропонована до уваги розвідка має на меті продемонструвати важливість нового для української історіографії напрямку публічної історії для розвитку країни і для зміцнення її позицій на міжнародній арені. В якості прикладу обрано Австралію, яка перетворилася із колись віддаленої Terra Incognita на одну з провідних держав сучасного світу. Акцентовано на тому, що попри досягнуті успіхи, проблема ідентичності стоїть так само гостро, як і перед іншими країнами в умовах глобальної кризи. З’ясовуються витоки тренду публічної історії, пояснюються фактори, що сприяти його поширенню планетою, звертається увага, що цей тренд став закономірним результатом розвитку історичної науки західної цивілізації, яка обіймає країни Європи, Америки, Австралії. Остання, є відгалуженням західної цивілізаційної гілки, сприйняла орієнтири, накреслені американськими науковцями, здійснені на прагматичних засадах. Визначено кроки в інституціоналізації названого напрямку, характеризується діяльність Австралійського центру публічної історії при Сіднейському технологічному університеті, часопису «Огляд публічної історії», а також особливості їхньої роботи у діджитальну еру під гаслом: «Історія для публіки, про публіку, разом із публікою». Під цим же гаслом публічні історики працюють з локальною і сімейною історією, співробітничають з державою у сенсі комеморації, для якої важливі музеї, меморіали, пам’ятники. При розгляді національних свят, особлива увага приділена Національному дню вибачень, що є віддзеркаленням складності австралійської історії. Подібно до американської публічної історії, австралійська також велику увагу стала приділяти тим групам населення, які раніше не входили до кола інтересів дослідників, а саме аборигенам. Робиться висновок щодо значення історії в цілому і публічної історії зокрема для здійснення політики національної ідентичності – важливої запоруки стабільного і успішного розвитку держави.
