The article presents the results of the research on the private book collection of J.I. Kraszewski whose historical novels were inseparably related to his gathering-antiquarian and scholarly editorial interests. The writer possessed a perfectly organized research workshop in the form of a rich and large library. It consisted of 10 233 items that included 14 389 volumes, 2 300 of which concerned the history of Poland. The analysis of historical novels allows for stating that while working on such books, Kraszewski used numerous sources and historical studies. He focused on sketching the background of the depicted epoch, presenting authenticcharacters and events. He paid less attention to purely romantic, fictitious elements that were the figments of imagination. His behaviour was in accordance with his theoretical views on historical novel. Kraszewski paid special attention to chronicles. The article presents the results of an analysis of one of the chronicles, namely the Chronicle written by a German prior, later a Merserburg bishop, Thietmar, which was written in the years 1012–1018 and a historical novel by Kraszewski Lubonie (1876). In the book, the author described the reign of Mieszko I, and focused on two important events: the attempts of concluding an alliance with Bolko and the issue of christianization of Poland. These events connect two dates: year 965 (arrival of Dubrawka to Poland) and 973 (the death of the Emperor Otto). It was established that the Chronicle by Thietmar provided Kraszewski with factual material that was used for presenting historical episodes, scenes and characters. Similarity of some fragments of the novel to the excerpts from the Thietmar’s chronicle (a few examples are provided) proves that Kraszewski used the chronicle while writing his book.

The Image of Slovenes and Gottschee Germans in the Historical Novel Rebellion in der GottscheeThis article surveys the literature of the Gottschee Germans, the formal inhabitants of the Gottschee region in Slovenia. It begins by summarising the history and literary works of the Gottschee Germans, and secondly it deals with the historic novel Rebellion in der Gottschee by Karl Rom. The novel was published in 1938 in German. It focuses on the great peasant revolt in Slovenia (Carniola) that took place in 1515. The revolt was organised by the Gottschee Germans against the violent landlord and was soon repressed after that. Based on image studies (imagology) the article analyses the picture presented of the Slovenes and Gottschee Germans and discusses how Slavs (Slovenes) and Germans (Gottschee Germans) are represented in the novel. Wizerunek Słoweńców i Niemców z Kočevja w powieści historycznej Rebellion in der GottscheeArtykuł analizuje literaturę Niemców z Kočevja, będących niegdyś mieszkańcami tego słoweńskiego regionu. Mieszkańcy Kočevja wzniecili bunt przeciwko okrutnemu właścicielowi ziemskiemu, jednak został on bardzo szybko stłumiony. Wpisując się w perspektywę imagologiczną, artykuł bada wizerunek Słowian (Słoweńców) i Germanów (Niemców z Kočevja) przedstawionych w powieści. Podoba Slovencev in kočevskih Nemcev v zgodovinskem romanu Rebellion in der GottscheePrispevek preučuje književnost kočevskih Nemcev, nekdanjih prebivalcev slovenske pokrajine Kočevske.

The paper concentrates on selected passages from Uwe Johnsonʼs opus magnum, Jahrestage (Anniversaries), in which the Prague Spring and the events of 1968 play a key role, and develops some ideas on how narrations of history and critique of language can jointly (as a translation of sorts) be understood as a critical approach to what is taken to be the present and the reality of the past. It is argued that Hannah Arendtʼs notion of the unpredictability of the future and of the event variously influenced the modalities of narration as employed by Johnson. The central issue of Jacques Derridaʼs Prague lecture on how a city determines ‘our’ modes of (self-)preception and how a location can be grasped and ‘dated’ in writing is put to use in order to develop a singular perspective on some neglected aspects in Johnsonʼs work. Johnson’s novel and its commentaries nils plath 179 form a diverse reflection on time, reality, and the media which can affirm its contemporaneity when understood as exemplary in contesting, by the voice of literature, the functionalization of history and its narrative.
