The article discusses the current practices of commemorating the 1905 revolution in Łódź. The changes taking place in the city’s memory policy are conditioned both by the loss of memory of the events from a century ago and by changing political factors in the post-transformation period. The city is a paradigmatic example of a post-industrial city in Central and Eastern Europe facing an identity crisis. Narratives formulated ‘from above’ compete with those created ‘from below’. While the former are based on the construction of a utopian, capitalist city of success, the latter claim the history of the people of Łódź. Revitalising the memory of the Revolution of 1905 plays a key role in these negotiations, contributing to a revision of the post-transformation amnesia about the city’s working-class past.

Łódź that has never had significant literary tradition, reached a few interesting debuts of young artists during the dramatic years of the war. Tuwim siblings should be named among them, along with Aleksander Kraśniański and Mieczysław Braun. Multi-ethnicity of Lodz resulted in a diverse view on the ongoing conflict, which found its echo in the work of local writers. In their works we find descriptions of both the drama of everyday life as well as questions about the meaning of the war and the future of the reborn state. Since there was problem with publishing books, the local newspaper publishes gave enormous contribution to the development of local literature by publishing the work of young artists on its pages.

The archive numbers of the German paper Lodzer Zeitung, which was issued in Łódź between 1863–1915, allow presumptions regarding the life in the city of Łódź in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The paper prints official announcements and implements this way the plans of the current authorities in the city. The texts show at the same time the multicultural nature of the society in Łódź, which has build the industrial metropolis in the 19th century. The issues of the Lodzer Zeitung are furthermore an important witness to political events in Europe and the world, as well as express the bond of the Germans in Łódź towards their heritage and the city they have devoted their lives to.
