Author analyses a popular comic book series by H.J. Chmielewski, Tytus, Romek & A’Tomek (book from 1966–1987) and tries to reconstruct a propagandist vision of the Polish Peoples Republic’s reality. The main research tool is a content analysis of book, using knowledge of the political history of Poland and the world (1945–1989), social and mass communication context, history of media in Poland and rhetorics. Author describes the results, in relation to book by sociologist, Hanna Świda-Ziemba: The youth of Polish People’s Republic.

“Kurier Łódzki”, boasting a rich publishing tradition, was one of the most important daily newspapers in the Interwar period. Thanks to, among others, “Kurier’s” owner, Jan Stypułkowski and his activities, Łódź soon stopped being regarded as a mere pro-vincial publishing centre. Spreading over the country, Łódź's daily papers won a reader-ship in many regions of Poland. Stypułkowski's publications, including “Kurier Łódzki”, the paramount title, exerted a significant influence on the development of press in Łódź. Stypułkowski's daily newspaper consistently followed its editorial policy, as the news-paper evolved. Nonetheless, “Kurier” continued to present the national and Catholic values. Its attitude towards national minorities, especially to the Jewish one, was un-equivocal. The anti-Semitic rhetoric was the most pronounced in the first years of the Second Polish Republic. Although it was gradually becoming more substantive and factual, it could hardly be defined as objective.

The article offers an analysis of Bohumil Hrabal’s novel Příliš hlučná samota (Too Loud a Solitude) as a literary reflection of the history of censorship and book destruction in Bohemia. In terms of media theory, this history is a counterpart to the history of letter printing. Haňťa represents an anachronistic reader, resisting book destruction by insisting on a corporealistic, sensual notion of literature, which is inspired most notably by the work of François Rabelais. Thus, Hrabal offers a critique of the decline of reading culture in the Socialist era that is not just a political comment, but also an artistic vision of the beauty of destruction as well as a complex critique of writing and reading.

Článek podává rozbor Hrabalovy Příliš hlučné samoty jakožto literární reflexe historie cenzury a ničení knih v Čechách.
