This article ethnographically explores the consumption practices and strategies of Sarajevan households, framing them in the economic and socio-cultural dynamics that affected family life following the war and post socialist transformation. Displacement and the collapse of the socialist economic system led to Sarajevans suffering downward socio-economic mobility and widespread mistrust of the world outside. Despite the material issues that could be moral justification for the consumption strategies driven by strict necessity and familism, this article will consider how (humanitarian and interpersonal) donations and credits are used to convey a sort of symbolic reappropriation of the home and to strive to reposition the household’s socio-economic status. Ultimately the article takes into account how these consumption strategies reshape social relations within and outside the family in the peculiar conjuncture of post-war neoliberalism

This article gathers a variety of evidence demonstrating the rapid development of household consumption in the Czech Republic during the post-1989 period. In the first section, the basic features of household consumption under the communist regime are described. In the second section, the transition to a market economy and its likely positive impact on the economic conditions and behaviour of households is discussed. In the third section, post-1989 changes in patterns of family expenditures are documented and compared with several other EU countries. In the fourth section, a critical assessment of the development of Czech consumer culture with its agencies and clients is placed in the context of broader debates about the meaning of mass consumerism. Both the positive and negative features of booming consumption are summarised in the conclusion.

PL
Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie konsumpcji prywatnej w Korei Południowej oraz wykazanie, że jej charakter jest m.in. efektem przyspieszonego rozwoju w drugiej połowie XX wieku. Analizie poddano przyczyny niskiego poziomu konsumpcji prywatnej względem PKB i niskiej dynamiki wzrostu w ostatnich latach. Ponadto porównano strukturę wydatków konsumpcyjnych gospodarstw domowych w Polsce i Korei i wyjaśniono podstawowe różnice. Szczegółowo omówiono wysoki poziom wydatków na restauracje i hotele, edukację, ochronę zdrowia i łączność, wykazując, że wynikają one z szybkiego tempa życia w Korei, powszechnego pędu za karierą i nowoczesnością.

The article describes the dynamics and character of private consumption in South Korea. The author argues that the patterns and low growth rate of Korea’s consumption habits are to some extent influenced by the rapid economic growth the country went through in the second half of the 20th century. She discusses the low volume of imports of consumer goods and the Korean passion for luxury goods. The article includes a comparison between consumer spending in Korean and Polish households, highlighting spending on hotels and restaurants, education, healthcare, communication, etc. The author explains that Korea’s high expenditure in these areas are linked to a fast pace of life, career-orientation and fascination with modernity, typical characteristics of this fast-developing nation.
