Hymny kongregacyjne są zazwyczaj komponowane przez księży lub kantorów. Są one przekazywane w formie śpiewu zbiorowego i często stają się anonimowym dobrem wspólnym zgromadzenia. W węgierskich wioskach wiele hymnów kongregacyjnych zostało przyswojonych przez lud. Były one śpiewane w tym samym „lokalnym” stylu co pieśni ludowe (ze swobodnymi rytmami i bogatą ornamentyką). Muzykolodzy węgierscy zbierali na terenach wiejskich hymny z XVI i XVII wieku. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że w procesie asymilacji melodie były nieco, a czasem znacząco modyfikowane. Wynikało to z różnicy tonalnej między hymnami, skomponowanymi w większości w tonacjach Dur-moll, a węgierskimi pieśniami ludowymi, w których przeważały dawne skale. Wyniki zbierania folkloryzowanych hymnów zostały wykorzystane przy opracowywaniu nowego śpiewnika, w którym opublikowano żywe wersje ludowe wielu dawnych hymnów.

Congregational hymns are usually composed by priests or cantors. Hymns are transmitted via congregational singing and they often become the anonymous common property of the whole congregation. In Hungarian villages many congregational hymns were adapted by the local people. These hymns were sung in the same “local” style as the folksongs (with free rhythm and rich ornamentation). Hungarian musicologists have collected hymns from the 16th and 17th centuries in rural areas. During the process of assimilation, the melodies were slightly, or sometimes significantly, modified. This occurred as a consequence of the tonal difference between the hymns, composed mostly in major-minor tonalities, and Hungarian folksongs, which predominantly use old modes. The results of this collection of folklorized hymns were used in the compilation of a new hymnal in which the editors published the contemporary folk versions of many old hymns.

After centuries of celebrating the divine services only in German language, the Evangelical Church A. C. in Romania (ECR) embarked during the last few decades on the use of a second language within church. The traditional “Evangelical-Saxon” identity of the congregations is undergoing a changing process. Having lost most of its members through emigration, the Evangelical Church A. C. in Romania copes with new social circumstances which have also an effect upon the choice of language. Therefore, in 2007, the ECR published a bilingual (German and Romanian) hymnal. Translating hymns is an intricate endeavour. The practical use of a bilingual hymn-book is challenging as well. The German-Romanian Evangelical hymnal is a witness of how the diaspora church accommodates itself to new linguistic conditions.

W bogatym zasobie polskich kancjonałów protestanckich można znaleźć liczne pieśni, które w sposób bardziej lub mniej oczywisty przeznaczone były dla dzieci albo młodzieży. Obecność takich utworów wynikała w dużej mierze z zaleceń Lutra dotyczących edukacji religijnej poprzez muzykę. Do repertuaru dziecięcego należały przede wszystkim modlitwy przeznaczone do odmawiania lub odśpiewywania w ciągu dnia: Wyznanie wiary, Modlitwa Pańska, Dekalog, modlitwy poranne, wieczorne, związane z posiłkami.In the rich repertoire of Polish Protestant hymnals many songs can be found, more or less explicitly intended for children or adolescents. The presence of such works was largely a result of Luther’s recommendations on religious education through music. The children’s repertoire included primarily prayers for reciting or singing during the day: the Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Decalogue, morning and evening prayers, various meals prayers.

The object of interest is a description of manuscript L 1642 which belongs to the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. This manuscript is a Hymnal, which was written in 1721 and it belonged to the Benedictine Sisters in Sandomierz. The material includes medieval European and Polish 16th and 17th century liturgical and paraliturgical songs. The texts in the manuscript are written in Latin and Polish. The Hymnal contains carols, the Advent, Easter and Passion songs among others; there are 77 works in total and only one has no musical notes (its text is written at the end of the manuscript). Most works are known and correspond with the content of other hymnals, e.g. the ones that belonged to the Benedictine Sisters in Staniątki, the Carmelite Sisters in Kraków, and the Clarisse Sisters in Gniezno. There are also some songs in Walenty Bartoszewski’s ("Parthenomelica albo Pienia nabożne o Pannie Najświętszej", 1613) and Stanisław Serafin Jagodyński’s works ("Pieśni katolickie nowo reformowane", 1638). The Hymnal is compiled by Anna Stogniewówna or, according to Magdalena Walter-Mazur, by Zofia Bratysiewiczówna. The manuscript is an interesting source of the known literary and musical culture of the Benedictine Sisters in Sandomierz. It also shows the popularity of these religious works. The Hymnal also contains some unknown versions of songs.
