The article focuses on young people of foreign origin in Italy, analysing in particular the experiences of those of a homosexual orientation. Starting from a theoretical reflection that takes into account the various possible statuses expressing young migrants situation, we will analyse the complexities that arise in terms of identity for young foreigners who, when living their sexuality, relate both with the cultural standards of the country of origin (often homophobic and repressive) and with those of the host country, in which they can instead intercept new opportunities to express themselves and their desires. The core idea is to verify the means through which they manage these contrasts, aiming at empirically outlining the strategies of behaviour, thus increasing the understanding of the ongoing processes of social and cultural integration.

The study ‘Current Manifestations of the Ethnic Identity of Transylvanian Saxons’ presents this ethnic minority in Romania. Based on the theoretical concepts of T. H. Eriksen, it deals with the issues of the ethnic identity and its contemporary manifestations in the culture of Transylvanian Saxons. Information gathered during the qualitative field research make it possible to capture changes in the manifestations of the ethnic identity and the relationship between the minority and the majority culture. As a result of modernization processes and large-scale emigration, there has been a change of the group’s mentality, with traditional behaviour patterns and models of social coexistence disintegrating. The need has arisen to revise the ethnic identity of the community. The observed aspects of the ethnic identity include ethnicity and Saxon self-concept, Saxon dialect, Saxon Evangelical Church, festivities, minority education and interethnic relations. Attention is also paid to the opinions of Saxon politicians and intellectuals of the current situation of the society and its future direction.

Poland has witnessed a rise in cross-border migration from both within the European Union and from regions around the world. A demographic consequence is biracial families in Poland. A social consequence is that in formerly racially homogenous Poland, racial inequality evolves from a nascent stage experienced by the few to a rapidly developing institution, with biracial families caught in the middle of past and future. In this article I discuss the methodology of a research project on identity strategies of Black African men, White Polish mothers, and biracial children, and the communities that they build. These groups are sensitive populations due to the racism, xenophobia, and discrimination that they face. I discuss (a) how the oral history method can be effective when working with sensitive populations, (b) the ethical and privacy concerns that come with social network snowball sampling and maintaining the anonymity of this population, and (c) how self-reflexive methods offers an honest, straightforward, and effective approach to examine the subjects and communities of my research.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that there is a strong correlation between the concept of human nature and culturally dominant strategies for constructing the “Other” in European culture. This relationship results in specific challenges for the social anthropologist, particularly in connection with efforts to overcome common knowledge by unveiling and disclosing the real structure of social processes. The sphere of biopolitics has shown that citizens can be stimulated by fear to act. Yet fear has a moral dimension, and thus an engaged anthropology is now needed in order to combat social injustice more actively.
