The teaching of Benedict XVI during the celebration of Holy Orders or during other celebrations confirms the theological truth about the central role of laying hands and prayer in the rites of Holy Orders. The pope puts emphasis on the complete submersion of the presbyter into Christ and His life. This entails participating in the mission that Christ assigned to his disciples. Through the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the presbyter is anointed and consecrated, that is sacrificed to God. This translates onto his being at full disposal to God and the Church. The presbyter should confirm this disposal each day of his service. In his reflection on the meaning of the rites of Holy Orders (vesting and anointing of hands), the pope points out an analogy between the Sacrament of Baptism and of Holy Orders. Vesting of the new clothes is vesting of Christ. These new garments also confirm the ordinand’s saying “yes” to the Saviour through his participation in the Sacrament. The analysis of prayers that formerly accompanied the rite of vesting helps assess the spiritual discipline of the presbyter, which is needed if he is to remain an authentic witness and servant of Christ. The presbyter’s instruments of service are his hands, anointed with the oil of holy chrism. These hands are responsible for passing the Divine touch to the world. The rite of anointing makes the presbyter participate in the act of anointing of Christ.

Nauczanie Benedykta XVI podczas udzielania święceń prezbiteratu czy innych okazji potwierdza teologiczną prawdę o centralnym miejscu gestu nałożenia rąk i modlitwy w obrzędach święceń. Papież akcentuje fakt całkowitego włączenia prezbitera w Chrystusa i Jego życie. Niesie to za sobą udział w misji, jaką Jezus powierzył apostołom. Przez sakrament święceń prezbiter zostaje namaszczony, konsekrowany, czyli ofiarowany Bogu. Wyraża się to w byciu dyspozycyjnym Bogu i Kościołowi. Prezbiter powinien aktualizować tę dyspozycyjność każdego dnia swojej posługi. W refleksji nad znaczeniem obrzędów wyjaśniających święcenia (włożenie szat kapłańskich i namaszczenie dłoni), Papież wskazuje na analogię pomiędzy sakramentem chrztu i święceń. Wyraża się to w odzianiu w szaty liturgiczne, które oznacza przyobleczenie się w Chrystusa. Jest ono także aktualizacją „tak” wypowiedzianego Zbawicielowi przez święcenia. Analiza modlitw towarzyszących niegdyś przy ubieraniu szat liturgicznych pozwala określić duchową dyscyplinę prezbitera, której zachowywanie pozwoli być autentycznym świadkiem i sługą Chrystusa. Narzędziami służby prezbitera są jego dłonie, namaszczone olejem świętego krzyżma. Ich zadaniem jest przekazywanie Boskiego dotyku. Namaszczenie sprawia, że prezbiter ma udział w namaszczeniu Chrystusa.

The subject matter of the above paper is the role and position of the Church community in the rite of ordination to the priesthood in the byzantine tradition. It has been considered the split of the orthodox ministers into the church ministers (lower ordination) and ordained ministers (higher ordination). The influence of the local community upon the election of the candidates to priesthood has been weakened with time and nowadays within the Orthodox Church only the local bishop decides about the appointment of the new ministers and only the imposition of hands is regarded as the sacramental rite. The contemporary liturgy of ordination, however, has preserved some significant elements reminding us about the former equal importance of the community influence, who used to elect by offering to God and at the same time to accept their shepherds. This role of the Church is expressed by three main parts of the rites: 1) the election of a candidate, 2) the imposition of hands of the bishop and prayer, 3) the reception of ordination and of the newly ordained. Out of the presented liturgy of ordination one can draw the outline of the eastern ecclesiology of the sacrament of ordination, already elaborated by Prof. N. Afanasiev. This kind of liturgical ecclesiology may be of some help to the contemporary Church in regaining her more active role in electing and apointing her ministers and shepherds.
