This study is an attempt to describe the current condition of the watermills situated in the river valleys of the Silesian voivodeship. Changes in the number and distribution of mills from the late 18th century until the 20th century have been presented (as exemplified by the Liswarta River basin in the northern part of the voivodeship). Watermills have been discussed both as industrial monuments that document the history of the milling industry and as tourist attractions. Currently, working mills that serve the local population in rural areas are a rarity, and working watermills are unique sites that should be protected as industrial monuments that constitute an important part of our cultural heritage. They are among those industrial monuments that are particularly vulnerable to destruction. Such mills increasingly attract the interest of industrial tourism promoters. Activities aimed at promoting watermills as cultural heritage sites and leading to their protection and preservation as part of the river valley landscape have also been discussed. In the Silesian voivodeship, there are many watermills that deserve attention; some of these are listed in the register of monuments maintained by the National Heritage Board of Poland. Unfortunately, most disused mills are falling into disrepair and are slowly disappearing; only a few have been preserved in good condition. Many of these have long histories and they are also situated in areas attractive for tourists. There is no doubt that watermills should be preserved. Their inclusion in open-air museums is not the only solution – any form of protection in situ by putting them to different uses is also valuable. Changing the function of a mill to serve as a hotel, restaurant, cultural centre, etc. makes it possible to maintain these sites as parts of river valley landscapes.

Industrial tourism in Poland is still a new phenomenon and it is a part of cultural and urban tourism. Recently, it is also becoming more and more popular among people. Industrial areas have tourism potential thanks to active factories, mines, and other industrial places and, of course, through historical landmarks like former mines, dumps, mineshafts, old factories, and chimneys. These characteristic landmarks of Bytom create the city’s identity and its distinguished historical richness. Unfortunately, nowadays industrial relicts are ignored and undervalued in the Bytom development. Evaluation of industrial stock can be easily used in creating interesting and unique tourism products. Industrial tourism can be placed in a special place on a touristic map of Bytom. Industrial areas can successfully attract tourism and business if they are properly manager by local government. Bytom, due to its ideal location, settlements, and public transportation has a great chance to become one of the industrial tourism cities in Poland.

Industrial-era heritage ofpolish citiesis a space ofcomprehensive changes that occur after 1989. Among these transitions we can indicate degradation and abandonment, but also conservation, adaptations of buildings to new functions and increasing tourist role of technical heritage. Valuable and differentiated heritage ofthis kind in Cracow was also significantly affected in last 20 years. Numerous examples of adaptations and renewals not only contributed to preservation of industrial landscape elements, but also raised attractiveness of urban space. 1 was achieved by creating new commercial, tourist, cultural and museum offer utilizing technical heritage.

Przemysłowe dziedzictwo ery polskich miast jest miejscem wszechstronnych zmian po 1989 r. Wśród nich możemywskazywać degradację, ale także ochronę, adaptację budowli do nowych funkcji i powiększającą rolę turystyczną technicznego dziedzictwa. Przykład Krakowa pokazuje, że odpowiednie zagospodarowanie czy podjęcie działań konserwatorskich względem tego rodzaju zabytków może znacznie podnieść atrakcyjność przestrzeni miejskiej. Atrakcyjność ta rozumiana może być na wiele sposobów, dziedzictwo to można bowiem wykorzystać nie tylko do tworzenia nowej oferty turystycznej i muzealnej, lecz także nietypowej oferty usług, kultury, a nawet (w przyszłości) mieszkalnictwa. Nie ulega również wątpliwości, że rewitalizacja zabytków techniki może znacznie wpływać na atrakcyjność wizualnej i estetycznej strony przestrzeni miejskiej. Celem rozważań jest uchwycenie przemian w zagospodarowaniu krakowskich zabytków techniki i ich otoczenia oraz towarzyszących temu zmian krajobrazu miejskiego. Szczególnie ostatnie lata (po 1989 r„ a zwłaszcza po 2000 r.) przyniosły szereg inicjatyw związanych nie tylko z zagospodarowaniem obiektów i terenów poprzemysłowych, lecz także konserwacją mniej znaczących obiektów inżynierskich. Równie interesujące są dalsze perspektywy i wyzwania związane m.in. z budową pierwszych w Krakowie „loftów” czy rozwojem Muzeum Inżynierii Miejskiej.
