Economic change, such as the collapse of heavy industry and the enterprises associated with it, successive depletion of raw materials, revolutionary change in technological processes, globalization, or the concentration of production in a smaller number of plants, which took place in Poland at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, has left a number of post-industrial sites in the Silesia Province. One of the options for the development of this industrial legacy is to use it for tourist purposes. Tourism-related activities carried out in former production, manufacturing, and service facilities constitute an economic alternative for a number of post-industrial sites currently considered “dead zones”. Their revitalization creates an ever growing number of innovative tourist products, which let tourists familiarize themselves with the history of the industry in an attractive way. It is thanks to them that we can appreciate the inventive genius of past researchers of that time. Associated with industrial tourism, subterranean tourism is a palpable proof to human ingeniousness. Sustainable preservation of this valuable urban space should be a high priority when the extremely difficult task of restructuring the area of Upper Silesia is undertaken.

Industrial tourism in Poland is still a new phenomenon and it is a part of cultural and urban tourism. Recently, it is also becoming more and more popular among people. Industrial areas have tourism potential thanks to active factories, mines, and other industrial places and, of course, through historical landmarks like former mines, dumps, mineshafts, old factories, and chimneys. These characteristic landmarks of Bytom create the city’s identity and its distinguished historical richness. Unfortunately, nowadays industrial relicts are ignored and undervalued in the Bytom development. Evaluation of industrial stock can be easily used in creating interesting and unique tourism products. Industrial tourism can be placed in a special place on a touristic map of Bytom. Industrial areas can successfully attract tourism and business if they are properly manager by local government. Bytom, due to its ideal location, settlements, and public transportation has a great chance to become one of the industrial tourism cities in Poland.

Łódź as a post-industrial city has great potential for post-industrial tourism. An attempt to utilise this has been the creation of the Łódź Industrial Architecture Trail, bringing together buildings related to its industrial past. According to the author, to make the trail a tourist attraction, the first people who should be aware of its value are the city’s inhabitants. The survey confirmed the very important role of social participation in creating the image of a city, and providing the basis for further work on its improvement and promotion. The article does not cover social participation as part of the process of development, but can serve as a contribution to a discussion of the role of a city’s inhabitants in shaping its tourism attractions. At the same time, the article confirms that social participation is an extremely important element of tourism research and forms an introduction to its effective use in practice.

The Ida-Viru County in northeast Estonia possesses a range of tangible and intangible heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries. Especially noteworthy are the textile and oil shale industries as they have used vast amounts of resources and space for their production in the past one hundred years. The new century has witnessed the textile industry being closed down and in the wake of the European green transition, the oil shale industry is facing a significant reduction as well. For economic diversification purposes, Ida-Viru has begun to promote itself since 2017 as an adventure tourism region, combining its sandy beaches and vast forests and mires with post-industrial entertainment. Studies on a local and national scale have emphasised the potential of industrial heritage tourism in Ida-Viru County, which can only be realised in collaboration and through proper mapping, assessment and promotion of industrial heritage by relevant specialists in consultation with local stakeholders. At the same time, policy documents and strategies still rarely feature industrial heritage tourism. Rather, buildings and architecture have been referred to as cultural and historical heritage, and post-industrial landscapes have been considered as adventure tourism objects. This article examines the practical implications that the existing heritage-led initiatives are facing while working towards the reanimation of post-industrial spaces, with a special focus on large sites. Interviews conducted with the directors, CEOs and PR managers of such initiatives reveal that it is generally agreed that domestic tourism alone cannot support industrial tourism in Estonia and it is necessary to increase both regional thematic collaboration and develop international networks and visibility. However, the potential of industrial tourism is still often latent or in development, hindered by differences in the agendas and funding of the initiatives, lack of trust and interest in industrial tourism from investors and the active industry, community scepticism and hope for re-industrialisation – those are the issues which are here further exemplified and analysed.

The Wielkopolska Windmill Trail is a new product of industrial tourism. It has been established in order to protect historical mills and to make the regions more attractive in terms of tourism. It is the largest windmill trail in Europe. The study aims at checking the level of knowledge of the population in the Poznań area about this route and determining the level of their interest in historical mills, and, in consequence, the forecast of its development. Based on the questionnaire survey performed among people of the Poznań area in April of 2013, there is a clear interest in the mechanisms of operation of historical mills, which demonstrates an increase of popularity of industrial tourism. Nevertheless, the level of knowledge about the route is very low. Promotional elements to disseminate knowledge about the route are missing – things such as: guidebooks, tourist leaflets, or information boards. Further development is subject mainly to the popularity of the route and publicity among potential tourists. Knowledge disseminated in the form of lectures, cultural events, but mainly folders and guidebooks, is a key to success.

Historical windmills, their history and traditions related to the profession of millers, account for a significant element of the cultural heritage of Wielkopolska. Establishment of the Wielkopolska Windmill Trail is correlated to the protection of wooden mills and aims at protecting the memory of an abundant rural history. The several hundred years of traditional milling history is simultaneously a rich source of folktales and legends, as well as, the craftsmanship of carpentry and the development of technique. The Wielkopolska Windmill Trail, as presented herein, shows the new role historical facilities play in modern society. Some mills on the route are actually ruins which clearly show that it is just the beginning of a long and winding road leading to the ultimate objective, i.e. the protection of cultural heritage. It should be noted that at some point in history, Wielkopolska used to be referred to as a “land of mills” and was a milling district in Europe. Industrial tourism evokes an increasing interest. Thus, former windmills contribute to the development of tourist infrastructure, and they make a given region more attractive. Ruins of mills, however, need the tourists’ interest to survive and to retain their heritage. The local residents, on the other hand, need the tourists’ interest in their region to improve their living standards. Therefore, the Wielkopolska Windmill Trail may turn out to be the key to solving the problem of the deteriorating monuments of the grain processing industry. There is hope for a new life for these mills, whose wings have been worn down mercilessly by time, where they start rotating in the sky again.

The contemporary development of urban centres is the result of the impact of many factors, which to a greater or lesser extent are determined by the management of local authorities. Among these determinants, culture plays a special role as it com-bines various areas of social life often creating new spaces, changing the current industrial image of Zabrze. When discussing culture as a factor in the development of local government, it should be remembered that today it is an integral part of tourism, especially in relation to the cultural spaces created, for example, in former industrial facilities. It also influences the creation of a new brand image through new economic functions succeeding those of the past. The aim of the article is to identify the cultural function of Zabrze in the unusual underground space of the Guido coal mine. The example of the transformation of an industrial facility and its underground part sheds new light on old unattractive former mining areas and at the same time shows functional succession from industrial to cultural.
