Among the graphic motifs used to decorate initials on medieval documents of Wrocław bishops, several dominant tendencies can be distinguished, such as decorationswith animal motifs – fish, floral motifs – oak and grapevines, as well as in the form of geometric patterns. A relatively common practice was to combine geometric elementswith plant or animal, which resulted in the creation of specific ornamental hybrids. Moreover, the initials were decorated by filling the initial with the ink, which the entire document was written, increasing the initial with respect to the entire text, and drawing only the outline of the letter with the probable intention of filling it in later. The analyzed documents were also familiar with leaving empty spaces in places where initials should appear.

Pośród motywów graficznych wykorzystywanych do ozdabiania inicjałów na średniowiecznych dokumentach biskupów wrocławskich wyróżnić można kilka dominującychtendencji jak: zdobienia z motywem zwierzęcym – ryby, roślinnym – dębu oraz winorośli, a także w postaci wzorów geometrycznych. Stosunkowo częstą praktyką byłołączenie ze sobą elementów geometrycznych z roślinnymi czy zwierzęcymi, co owocowało powstawaniem swoistych zdobniczych hybryd. Ponadto inicjały ozdabiano poprzez wypełnianie je atramentem, którym został spisany cały dokument, zwiększeniem go względem całego tekstu oraz wrysowywaniem jedynie konturu litery, z prawdopodobnym zamiarem jej późniejszego wypełnienia. Analizowanym dokumentom nieobce było również pozostawieniepustych przestrzeni w miejscach, gdzie powinny widnieć inicjały.

The paper presents the Cyrillic XVII-century manuscript “Vinets Khrystov”, comprising Baroque sermons by the prominent Ukrainian preacher Antonii Radyvylovskyi. Special attention is paid to the decorative elements employed for illuminating and structuring the content of the codex, which serves as the model for the namesake edition published in Kyiv in 1688. The study demonstrates that the embellishments of “Vinets” are an integral part of the manuscript, often correlating with its textual part. Initials, headpieces, and tailpieces, as well as the title composition in “Vinets Khrystov”, can be employed to purely decorate and meaningfully illustrate the monument.
