Research background: The uncertainty in the environment and rapid changes have impact on firms, regions and countries. The necessity to adapt to new conditions requires a stimulation of actions aimed at enhancing competitiveness and economic growth. In this respect, the European Union strategy called Europe 2020 should be mentioned. Regarding the role of firms? innovation activities in economic growth of regions and countries, substantial im-portance was attached to how innovation activities of Polish firms differ from those from the other EU countries with a level of innovation similar to Poland. Here, a particular emphasis was put on Moderate Innovator countries. Purpose of the article: The aim of this paper is to investigate Polish firms? innovation activities against those by other Moderate Innovator countries. Methodology: In the study a multivariate analysis and zero unitarization methods were applied. These methods allowed for a division of Moderate Innovator countries into four groups and for a multivariate analysis of firms? innovation activities in Poland and other EU countries with a level of innovation similar to Poland. The study was based on data from the European Innovation Scoreboard 2016 relating to dimensions of firm activities: firm in-vestments, linkage & entrepreneurship and intellectual assets. The study referred to the period 2008?2015. Findings & Value added: This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing new insight on understanding the issues related to firms? innovation activities. The analysis has revealed several conclusions. One of them indicated the highest distance of Polish firms to those from the other Moderate Innovator countries, in terms of SMEs innovating in-house, innovative SMEs collaborating with others and public-private co-publications. The findings have practical and policy implications. It is assumed that the obtained results may be useful for firms, regions and countries in adaptation to uncertainty in the environment and, therefore, in maintaining  competitive advantage capacity.

Research background: Cooperation is an indispensable element of innovation activities of enterprises. Undertakings in innovation, by nature, require not only significant expenditures or creative human capital, but also cooperation with other enterprises, scientific institutions, and the business environment. Cooperating companies have a greater chance to compete in the international arena while building the innovative potential of the regional environment. Stimulating the permanent cooperation of enterprises operating in the region, in its various forms, is a key challenge for central government authorities, local government authorities, and other actors in social and economic life. The existing literature on the cooperation of enterprises focuses on the motives of cooperation and their effects, but to a lesser extent on the spatial similarity of these processes, i.e. in individual regions of the country. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the article is to diagnose and evaluate regional differences in the level of cooperation between companies conducting innovation activities in Poland. The study used data on innovation activities published by Statistics Poland and data on enterprises participating in cluster cooperation published by the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development. Methods: The cluster analysis was used, allowing to identify voivodeships that are similar to each other in terms of the analyzed phenomenon. The spatial classification of voivodeships was performed using the Ward method, which is classified as hierarchical and is often used to group objects. The result is a hierarchical tree that groups the regions in increasingly larger clusters. Findings & value added: The results indicate a low level of cooperation and the existence of significant differences in the cooperation of enterprises as part of innovation activities in Polish regions. The low level of cooperation between companies in individual regions corresponds to the number of marketed innovations. There are similarities between some regions in terms of cooperation on innovation activities. The results of the analysis may provide an indication for national and European Union economic policy entities in the field of creating instruments to support the cooperation of companies on innovation activities.

Pierwsza część artykułu przedstawia podstawowe pojęcia związane z wiedzą i jej klasyfikacją. Omówiony został również model spirali wiedzy w organizacji. Przyjęto tezę, zgodnie z którą innowacja to aktywność relacyjna pomiędzy poszczególnymi jednostkami i instytucjami wyrażana poprzez indywidualne działania, czy też serię działań indywidualnych i instytucjonalnych.

The aim of this article is to show the importance of knowledge in the development of business innovation activities. The first part of this article presents the basic concepts of knowledge and its classification. Also the spiral model of knowledge in organizations has been presented. The article assumes that the innovation is a relational activity between individuals and institutions, expressed through individual actions or a series of individual and institutional actions. The second part of the article presents the results of empirical research on innovation and the influence of innovation on the overall business income. This section presents the evaluation of the relation- ships between the positions in organizations and the correlated use of knowledge in the process of creating innovation. The goal of each organization is continuous development of the company through the process of innovation. However, this process requires companies to stay receptive to new ideas and cooperation with other entities. Creating an adequate network of knowledge enables enterprises to acquire knowledge from outside and share it inside the organizations thus contributing to their innovation.

Kooperencja (koopetycja) przedsiębiorstw odnosi się do specyficznej relacji między przedsiębiorstwami wiążącej cechy kooperacji i konkurencji. Podjęty w pracy problem dotyczy oceny przesłanek współpracy przedsiębiorstw w warunkach dużego skupiska terytorialnego. Problem współpracy odniesiony został do przesłanek konkurencyjności i podejmowanych działań innowacyjnych. Specyfika klastrowego skupiska powinna wyzwalać skłonność do zawiązywania relacji charakteryzujących zjawisko koperencji. Dokonano dwu etapowej analizy i oceny. W pierwszym zbadano ogólne tło współpracy w zagłębiu meblowym (klaster), używając metodyki badania zestawu czynników z charakterystyk sektorowych i organizacyjnych.

This article presents an analysis of selected aspects of innovation activities of food industry enterprises in Poland between the years 2010 and 2014. This goal has been achieved through the expenditures provided for innovation activities and the effects achieved in this area and measured by two factors: the share of the sales of new products, or significantly improved products, in the total sale, and the share of the enterprises which introduced product and processing innovations, as well as innovative organisational and marketing solutions. The enterprises examined in this study understand the need of introducing innovation; they undertake innovation activities both in the area of technological and non-technological innovations. The actively innovative enterprises also show a considerable tendency to take up cooperation with external subjects within the framework of the innovation activity they incorporate.
