The paper intends to outline the evolution of modern perspective on innovation. In the 1970 s there was a classical model of innovation which was seen as a system of methods, resources, and goals, all of which have got transformed alongside lines delineated by the following variables: innovation, entrepreneurship, and the room for manoeuvre. Modern innovation has got a much wider scope of fluctuations, which covers: knowledge, environment, and specific strategic options. Unlike the classical one, the modern model of innovation stresses creativity, which is why it has been called a creative model.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie na ewolucję współczesnego sposobu patrzenia na innowacje. W latach 70. ubiegłego wieku posługiwano się klasycznym modelem innowacji, traktowanym jako system metod, środków i celów, które podlegały transformacji zgodnie ze zmiennymi: innowacyjnością, przedsiębiorczością kreowaną oraz swobodą manewru. Współczesne innowacje ulegają znacznie szerszemu zakresowi zmian, które obejmują: wiedzę, środowisko oraz określone opcje strategiczne. W odróżnieniu od klasycznego, współczesny model innowacji kładzie nacisk na kreatywność, stąd też został nazwany modelem kreatywnym.

Transforming innovation models in European regions: Breaking out of path dependency and growing faster?

The aim of the paper is to verify whether a change in innovation model by less-developed regions may speed up development processes and if innovativeness plays crucial role in these processes. Cluster analysis conducted for the years 1994-2014 showed that the majority of lessdeveloped regions in 1994-2000 that experienced significant growth by 2011-2014 changed their innovation models. Logit regression confirmed that innovation factors play a crucial role in high growth rates. The findings suggest that less-developed regions can break out of path dependency by increasing their shares of high-tech industries and employment in science and technology and boosting technology transfer, which usually involves changing and improving their innovation models.

The article deals with the priorities and dynamics of the Canada urban development and describes the sustainable cities evolution. The purpose of the work is to compare the main achievements in the implementation of sustainable cities in Canada and to outline the problems and prospects of the formation of smart cities. To date smart cities is also an innovative system, where technologies are used to improve the relationship between citi-zens and their governments and provide social innovation and improve quality of life. A sustainable and smart cities is a place where citizens work with local authorities to im-prove service delivery, develop community initiatives and create solutions to improve quality of life. In this context, it is important to analyze the current policy of sustainable urban development in Canada in order to identify problem points and formulate recommendations for further development.

Artykuł dotyczy priorytetów i dynamiki kanadyjskiego rozwoju miast oraz opisuje ewolucję miast zrównoważonych. Celem pracy jest porównanie głównych osiągnięć w zakresie wdrażania miast zrównoważonych w Kanadzie oraz przedstawienie problemów i perspek-tyw tworzenia miast inteligentnych. Do tej pory inteligentne miasta to także innowacyjny system, w którym technologie są wykorzystywane do poprawy relacji między obywatelami a ich rządami oraz zapewnienia innowacji społecznych i poprawy jakości życia. Zrówno-ważone i inteligentne miasta to miejsce, w którym obywatele współpracują z władzami lokalnymi w celu poprawy świadczenia usług, rozwoju inicjatyw społecznych i tworzenia rozwiązań poprawiających jakość życia. W tym kontekście ważne jest przeanalizowanie obecnej polityki zrównoważonego rozwoju miast w Kanadzie aby zidentyfikować punkty problemowe i sformułować zalecenia dotyczące dalszego rozwoju.
