In a knowledge-based economy innovativeness is among the most significant factors that are decisive for the competitiveness of modern businesses. EU member states undertake numerous activities to support the innovativeness of their businesses and to reduce the distance between them and the global leaders of innovativeness. In Poland only a small proportion of businesses run innovative activities and the level of innovativeness of the economy significantly differs from that of the majority of EU states. Stimulating an enterprise’s innovative potential is significantly influenced by cooperation and connections with the institutions of the business environment. The institutions supporting the innovative activity of businesses in Poland are not fit to meet their needs. At the same time the civil factor, namely the entrepreneurs, is not taken advantage of. Their role in business life can be strengthened by the chambers of commerce and industry – the institutions of public law that represent all entrepreneurs and which are competent to participate in the shaping and implementation of policies to promote the innovativeness of the state and its regions.

Celem artykułu jest analiza pozycji polskich przedsiębiorstw na tle Unii Europejskiej oraz ocena wpływu innowacyjności na rozwój gospodarczy. W artykule zaprezentowano pozycję polskich przedsiębiorstw w Unii Europejskiej i stwierdzono, że należy wesprzeć polski sektor małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw funduszami ze Strategii na rzecz Zrównoważonego Rozwoju (duże przedsiębiorstwa zajmują wyższą pozycję niż sektor MSP). Przeanalizowano rankingi dotyczące innowacyjności Polski, która zajmuje czołowe miejsce pod tym względem w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej, jednak aby dogonić liderów w Unii Europejskiej, powinny być podjęte działania sprowadzające się m.in. do zwiększenia transferu innowacyjnych rozwiązań z ośrodków akademickich. Ostatnie poruszone zagadnienie dotyczy innowacyjności przedsiębiorstw w Polsce. Jak się okazuje, polskie przedsiębiorstwa w coraz większym stopniu angażują się w pracę sektora badawczo-rozwojowego, podobnie jak to ma miejsce w przypadku gospodarek rozwiniętych. W artykule zostały zaprezentowane wnioski i postulowane kierunki działań w zakresie roli polskiej gospodarki w Unii Europejskiej pod względem innowacyjności. Duże przedsiębiorstwa wdrażają te technologie, jednak w stopniu nieproporcjonalnym do skali prowadzenia ich działalności.

The aim of the article is to analyze the position of Polish companies in the European Union and to assess the impact of innovation on economic development. The position of Polish companies in the European Union was presented and it was stated that support should be given to the Polish small and medium enterprises sector with funds from the Strategy for Sustainable Development (large enterprises are on higher position than the SME sector). Next, we analyzed the innovation rankings of Poland, which is the most innovative country in the CEE region. However, to catch up with the leaders of the European Union, a number of actions have to be taken, for example increased transfer of innovative solutions from academic centers. The latest issue concerns the innovativeness of enterprises in Poland and the following considerations have led to the conclusion that Polish companies are increasingly involved in the work of the R&D sector, as is the case with developed economies. Presented conclusions and directions of action on the role of the Polish economy in the European Union in terms of innovativeness. It was noted that large companies are implementing these technologies, but not to the extent of their scale.
