The main aim of this article is an assessment of the Polish research institutes’ experiences in communication with society. The main hypothesis is that research institutes in Poland do not acknowledge a potentially profound role of communication with society. The article presents the results of literature review as well as of questionnaire-based research among 38 Polish institutes. There are folowwing key findings. There is no established conceptualization of science-society communication yet. In the analyzed institutes, communication with society is still not a priority in their operations. It is suggested that this communication should be a planned, organizationally and financially separated activity within the research institution. Such activities should be an important element of the institute’s strategy. Where it is justified, an organizational unit should be established within the institute to deal with communication with society. The unit might also conduct a business-oriented communication because it is very difficult to separate these two types of communication from one another.
