The aim of this article is to analyse the process of creation of the Malina (Raspberry) project (2018) through the prism of the assumptions of the Placówka (Outpost) programme of the Theatre Institute in Warsaw, which had a nurturing and disciplinary function towards the selected project. Starting from the definition of the relation between the group of female artists and the institution as subjects meeting in a moment of ‘career coupling’, the author reflects on how both parties interpreted the implementation of the idea of a long-term, laboratory-based creative process, including the consent to suffering a ‘productive failure’. The main body of the article revolves around establishing the reasons and consequences of the residents’ failure to exercise their right to create an open, experimental form of the work-in-progress kind. Supported by the knowledge gathered during the rehearsals for the performance and the interviews conducted, the author indicates how economic and communicative difficulties translated into decisions regarding the organisation of the theatrical process.

The paper is a reminiscence of my first meeting with the colleagues from the Institute of Art History of Adam Mickiewicz University, which took place at an annual conference of the Association of Art Historians in 1974, titled “Reflection on Art.” Choosing an unusual title, I wanted to convey the impetus with which a group of young art historians from Poznań entered the decent and somewhat stagnant stage of Polish art history. The critique they presented was directed against Polish academic institutions, the problematic of the conference, the empty rituals of academic life, etc. Even though I did not accept all their objections, the heated debate suddenly turned out for me to be a liberating factor, stimulating continuous critical thinking which is an antidote for spiritual and intellectual captivity.

The article, which is a revised and expanded version of a chapter of the doctoral dissertation Devising Institutions. Institutional practices in contemporary performing arts, applies institutional critique as a perspective for reflection on modes of production and distribution of the international performing arts circuit. Based on an analysis of hypermobility as the prevailing political condition among artists and artworkers active in this field, the text introduces the notion of situated instituent practices as a tool to reflect those artistic approaches that challenge the prevailing modes of production and distribution. The examples of works by Sarah Vanhee and Benjamin Verdonck are presented as a gesture of ‘active withdrawal’ from the dominating working modes and rhythms that opens up for a political potential of the process of ‘home making’.

The article analyses the performance The Round staged in 2018 at the Centre for the Documentation of the Art of Tadeusz Kantor Cricoteka in Krakow. The author explains how the artists from the In Situ Project collective used the participatory tools not to engage the audience, but to explore the identity of the institution by its employees. She describes how odd theatrical actions in the museum building performed by the audience can change the perspective of the employees. The article shows how The Round could be read as a performance about public institution, its mission and responsibilities.

The article analyzes the transformational potential of the #MeToo movement in terms of personal experience, institutional, and social transformations, looking first of all at the dynamics the movement has created in theater in Poland and around the world. The author unveils the systemic dimension of violence encoded in invisible and standardized relations of domination and subordination, inscribed in the two models which are still very common in Polish theater: the "master and apprentice" model defining the position of a director and the "feudal" model visible in institutional relations.Looking at the "Gardzienice" case and the reactions of the public to the testimonies exposing violence, the author also mentions examples of institutional and systemic reactions to similar situations in British and Belgian theater. In this way, she outlines possible directions for action in Polish theater. She asks questions about the transformative and emancipatory potential of the #MeToo movement, emphasizing the necessity to consider an intersectional perspective, to build alliances and to practice promiscuous care.

The article analyses the media coverage of the accusations of sexual harassment and mobbing made against Henryk Jacek S., a long-time director of the Bagatela Theatre in Krakow, by its female employees. Based on the employees’ statements, the author tries to describe the situation in the theatre before the case was exposed. She refers to the category of ‘ugly feelings’, created and explored by Sianne Ngai, and specifically, to the affect of animatedness, which is characterised by particularly limited agency and the blurring of the boundary between the inside and the outside. The moment when the female employees broke the silence is associated by the author with the affect of disgust (as defined by Sara Ahmed) and the related revulsion and nausea. She also examines how this affective dynamic has influenced the women’s agency and effectiveness in relation to the recipients of their public appearances.

In the essay, the author, Łukasz Ronduda, relates his own work as an artist, a film director, an art historian and curator, discussed in the light of the cinematic turn and the formation of common ground between cinema and contemporary art in both artistic and institutional sense. Ronduda looks closely at his two full-length feature films: Performer (2015) and Serce miłości (Heart of Love) (2017) and highlights their wider context. The first frame of reference spans from experimental films to contemporary full-length productions dedicated to wide audience. The second reference is his own work involving academic research, curating, writing a novel and the creation of a found footage film. In this self-presentation, Ronduda discloses his different attempts to find the right medium to speak about and analyze contemporary art. The full-length film turned out to be particularly effective medium in its ability to express the truth by means of fiction, placing him between creation and institutional structure. Film as a medium of interpreting art  seems to productively question fixed boundaries between research, criticism and art.

The author analyzes Isadora Duncan’s ideas expressed in her lecture “The Dance of the Future,” setting them against the backdrop of the manifestos and concepts of Adolphe Appia, Edward Gordon Craig, and Konstantin Stanislavsky, who shared her interests and/or knew her personally. The marginalisation of Isadora Duncan in theater history is interpreted in the article as resulting from the patriarchal character of twentieth- and early twenty-first century theater, based on the cult of great masters. Revisiting Duncan’s ideas is thus a step towards revising historical narratives and speculatively expanding the choice of traditions. Referring to feminist theories, institutional critique, and disability studies, the author identifies the progressive elements of Duncan’s thinking that correspond to innovative trends in contemporary theater and performance practices.

The article reflects on the condition of contemporary critique of law in the light of institutional critique derived from the theory of art. This study aims to verify the thesis that institutional critique is a research perspective formed against the background of various trends of critical legal thought. This critique is affirmative and constructive in character. It focuses on the analysis of the performance of reflexive institutions and it also problematizes cognitive tensions that are inherent in legal institutions. The institutions are analysed in the light of the metaphor of aesthetic play. The article presents the theoretical grounding of the relationship between institutional critique and critical legal thinking in the light of the philosophy of law inspired by Jacques Rancière’s thought. Furthermore, selected examples of this critique and directions for its potential application are shown in the context of modelling patterns of dialogic legal culture as understood by the law and humanities movement.

Praca przedstawia teoretyczne ugruntowanie związku między krytyką instytucjonalną a krytycznym myśleniem prawniczym w świetle filozofii prawa inspirowanej myślą Jacquesa Rancière’a. Ponadto zostały ukazane wybrane przykłady i kierunki potencjalnego zastosowania owej krytyki w kontekście wykształcania wzorców dialogowej kultury prawnej, w rozumieniu nurtu prawa i humanistyki (law and humanities).
