The late Richard Grathoff has exerted a strong influence on the development of Polish interpretive sociology. The essay briefly describes his ties with Poland and proceeds to report on the problems raised at a recent symposium held in Warsaw in his memory. The major topics discussed at the symposium include life-worlds, social inconsistencies, the role of symbols, and the attributes of contemporary society.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie specyfiki badań nad muzyką i społeczeństwem, a także omówienie postulatów badawczych, składający się na metodologiczny program dla socjologii muzyki. Główną osią rozważań jest tzw. podejście socjologiczno-audialne, stanowiące propozycję dla szeroko pojętych studiów nad muzycznym wymiarem życia społecznego. W szczególności omówiono takie zagadnienia, jak perspektywa rozumiejąca, pamięć społeczno-muzyczna, „odpowiednie sposoby słuchania” i kontekstowe uchwycanie sytuacji społeczno-muzycznych, kompetencje muzyczne i dyspozycje estetyczne, znaczeniowość muzyki oraz komunikacyjna perspektywa badania praktyk muzycznych, politetyczne pojmowanie procesu muzycznego, heterogeniczne rozumienie audialności, a także procesy racjonalizacji praktyk muzycznych.

The aim of the paper is to present the methodological program for studying the musical dimension of social life. The author introduces the new sociological-audial approach as a proposal for the broadly understood studies of the musical dimension of social life. The article focuses on the specific nature of research on music and society. It lays out research postulates that constitute the methodological program for the sociology of music. In particular, the following issues are discussed: the interpretative approach to musical life, socio-musical memory, „appropriate ways of listening” and the contextual analysis of the socio-musical life, musical competences and aesthetic dispositions, the meaning of music and the communicative perspective in research on music practices. The author also analyzes the polythetic understanding of the musical process, the heterogeneous understanding of social life’s audial dimension and the process of rationalization of musical practices.

The article offers an introduction to a discussion on the epistemological and axiological assumptions of the biographical methods and, more broadly, interpretive sociology. It first presents the changes in the function (Funktionswandel, in the terminology of Karl Mannheim) of interpretive concepts as they entered mainstream sociology in recent decades: from the critique of disciplinary power (in the Foucauldian sense) to the lack of criticism towards governmentality. It is in this context that the position of the biographical method is discussed. Reservations toward the biographical method are then outlined from the points of view of two varieties of anti-essentialism (Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault). The conclusion postulates that interpretative sociology and the biographical method will once again take up a critical attitude, this time with regard to governmentality.

Artykuł stanowi zaproszenie do dyskusji nad epistemologicznymi i aksjologicznymi założeniami metody biograficznej, a szerzej – socjologii interpretatywnej. Najpierw zarysowana jest przemiana funkcji (Funktionswandel, termin Karla Mannheima), jakiej doznały niektóre idee interpretatywne w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach w związku z włączeniem ich do socjologii głównego nurtu: od krytyki (w Foucaultowskim sensie tego słowa) dotyczącej władzy dyscyplinarnej do braku krytycyzmu wobec rządomyślności. W tym kontekście omawiana jest sytuacja metody biograficznej. Następnie przedstawiane są wątpliwości wobec metody biograficznej z punktu widzenia dwóch wariantów antyesencjalizmu (Erving Goffman, Michel Foucault). Konkluzją jest postulat powrotu socjologii interpretatywnej i metody biograficznej do postawy krytycznej, tym razem wobec rządomyślności.

Przekład nie jest zjawiskiem wyłącznie językowym; zanurzony jest głęboko w kontekście społecznym i kulturowym. To konstatacja dosyć błaha, jednak tym bardziej zwraca ona uwagę na zaskakującą nieobecność zjawiska przekładu w refl eksji socjologicznej. Socjologia języka i socjologia literatury bardzo niewiele miejsca poświęcają problematyce tłumaczenia, choć przekład staje się wszechobecnym elementem świata społecznego. W związku z tym za nowatorski można uznać pomysł socjologii przekładu mający swoje źródło w przekładoznawstwie. Autorka nie chce stawiać tezy podobnie radykalnej do tej, którą zaproponował Eugene Nida, pisząc, że w ostatecznym rozrachunku wyłącznie socjologiczne podejście do tłumaczenia można uznać za prawomocne. W zamian za to, autorka prezentuje trzy socjologiczne podejścia do przekładu. Pierwsze z nich wywodzi się z hermeneutyki, drugie ujmuje tłumaczenie w kategoriach działania i faktu społecznego, trzecie natomiast korzysta z przekładu jako metafory zjawisk społecznych.

Translation is not just a linguistic phenomenon, as it is related to the social and cultural context. That is not a very innovative finding. But as such, it illustrates very clearly the surprising absence of sociological reflection on translation. Sociology of language and literature do not pay much attention to the issue of rendering – an ubiquitous aspect of our world. That is why the idea of a sociology of translation may be considered as a very fresh one. In the article I don’t state a thesis as radical as the one developed by Eugene Nida who wrote that „only a sociologistic approach to translation is ultimately valid”. Although, I present three possibilities of sociological study on translation – inspired by hermeneutics; viewing translation as a social action and as a social fact; and, finally, as a metaphor of social relations.
