Intimacy, Admirability, and Virtue: An Examination of Michael Slote's View

Virtues, according to Michael Slote, are our inner traits or dispositions. Slote defends "balanced caring" as an admirable character trait. He believes that caring more for intimates than others is admirable. A virtuous person attains balanced caring between intimates and others. This account of virtue conceived "balanced caring" as "fundamentally admirable" and it is the basic virtue. All other virtues, such as honesty, kindness, generosity, truthfulness, and so forth, are "derivatively admirable". This paper examines Slote's view and argues that Slote should explore the opposite situation because his idea of "balanced caring" and "admirability" is so vague and misleading. In contrast to his ideas, a reverse formulation that is caring for others more than for intimates seems plausible.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest umieszczenie zjawiska toalety publicznej w dwóch kontekstach: 1. historyczno-kulturowym, związanym z analizowanym przez Norberta Eliasa przesuwaniem się progu wstydu, cywilizacyjnymi przemianami o charakterze psycho i socjogennym; 2. socjologiczno-ekonomicznym, dotyczącym dostępności toalet publicznych, mającej wpływ na regulowanie tego kto, gdzie i kiedy może z nich korzystać. W częoeci pierwszej do analizy wybranych zagadnień zostały wykorzystane m. in. koncepcje psychoanalityczne i antropologiczne, w szczególnooeci jednak teoria czystości i brudu Mary Douglas. Częość druga została pooewięcona rozważaniom na temat sytuacji konkretnych grup społecznych, tj. bezdomnych, ulicznych handlarzy i handlarek, taksówkarzy i taksówkarek, dla których kwestie dostępności toalet publicznych uważa autorka za wyjątkowo istotne, bowiem mające wpływ zarówno na poziom ich dobrobytu, jak i dobrostanu psychicznego.

The aim of the paper is to place the phenomenon of public restroom in two contexts: 1. historical and cultural, which is related to the effect of rising “threshold of shame”, as analysed by Norbert Elias, as well as to the civilizational changes that influence society and individual; 2. socio-economical, regarding the accessibility of public toilets, which in turn has an impact on who, when and where can use them. In its first part, the work utilizes tools derived from psychoanalysis and anthropology, especially Mary Douglas’ theory of dirt and cleanliness. Part two is dedicated to the consideration of situations of different social groups, i.e. homeless people, street traders, taxi drivers, for whom, in author’s opinion, the matters of accessibility of public restrooms are especially important, having effect on their levels of prosperity and wellbeing.

Autorka artykułu zwraca przede wszystkim uwagę na miejsce, jakie zajmuje we współczesnych badaniach dotyczących autobiografii kobiet książka Czy w tej autobiografii jest kobieta? Kobieca literatura dokumentu osobistego od początku XIX wieku do wybuchu II wojny światowej. Zauważa, że kobieca literatura dokumentu osobistego nie jest jeszcze wystarczająco omówiona przez polską krytykę feministyczną. Anna Pekaniec podejmuje całościową próbę zbadania autobiografizmu tekstów kobiecych w perspektywie historycznoliterackiej i jako główny cel stawia wydobycie i opisanie cech kobiecej autobiografii, a także wskazanie propozycji definicji czy systematyzacji zjawisk typowych dla kobiecego autobiografizmu. Autorka artykułu zwraca uwagę na innowacyjność rozprawy – po raz pierwszy zagadnienie intymistyki kobiecej zostało poruszone w tak szerokiej skali, wskazując kierunki w znanych i nieznanych tekstach, rozszerzając pole badań na przedstawicielki różnych środowisk, o różnym statusie społecznym.

The author of the text draws particular attention to the place the book Czy w tej autobiografii jest kobieta? Kobieca literatura dokumentu osobistego od początku XIX wieku do wybuchu II wojny światowej occupies in contemporary research on women’s autobiography. She notes that women’s literature of personal document is not yet sufficiently discussed by the Polish feminist literary criticism. Anna Pekaniec takes a comprehensive attempt to examine women’s autobiographical texts in historical and literary perspective and as a main goal focuses on presenting and describing the characteristics of women’s autobiography, as well as outputing a proposal for a definition or systematization of phenomena typical for women’s autobiographical documents. The author of the text points at the innovation of the thesis – for the first time the issue of women’s intimate journaling was raised on such a wide scale, indicating the directions in familiar and unfamiliar texts, expanding the research field for female representatives of different backgrounds, of different social status.
