Artykuł omawia przyczyny zniknięcia hiszpańskiego jako języka pomocniczego na Filipinach po zmianie władzy kolonialnej pod koniec XIX wieku. Autor wyjaśnia najpierw kontekst geograficzny, etnograficzny i historyczny wysp, podsumowuje ewolucję języka od początku kolonizacji aż po dzień dzisiejszy ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pojawienia się języka kreolskiego chavacano oraz przedstawia tradycyjnie podawane przyczyny zniknięcia języka. Następnie porównuje ewolucję języka hiszpańskiego na Filipinach z innymi hiszpańskimi koloniami a w końcu stwierdza, że hiszpański zniknął z powodu połączenia wyjątkowych okoliczności historycznych, które nie miały miejsca na innych terytoriach byłego imperium hiszpańskiego.

This article examines the reasons for the disappearance of Spanish as an interlanguage in the Philippines (both as an official language and as a means of communication between speakers of different languages) after the change of colonial power at the end of the 19th century. First, the author explains the geographic, ethno-linguistic and historical context of the country, summarizes the evolution of Spanish in the Philippines from the beginning of the Spanish colonial period until the present day with special attention being given to the appearance of the creole Chavacano, and presents the traditional explanations for the disappearance of the language. Later he compares the evolution of Spanish in the Philippines with other former Spanish colonies. He concludes that Spanish disappeared through a combination of unique historical circumstances which did not occur in other territories of the former Spanish Empire.

The main aim of this article is to show how changes in the political and legal system taking place in Poland in recent decades have contributed to the presence of national and ethnic minorities in the public space of the country, as well as how the different minorities could or were able to use the favourable formal and legal transformations. The huge disparity in various manifestations of this public presence (bilingual names of places, offices, schools, the use of an auxiliary language, social and political activity, education, historical heritage) between nationalities is caused by many diverse reasons. Certainly, the favorable factors include the relatively large size and territorial concentration, but the activity shown by activists and local communities, as well as the internal integration of communities may also be considered decisive factors. It is owing to these circumstances, that some of the so-called historical used legal changes to become permanent parts of the public space in Poland.

Głównym celem artykułu jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób zmiany systemu politycznego i prawnego zachodzące w Polsce w ciągu ostatnich dekad wpłynęły na obecność mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych w przestrzeni publicznej kraju, oraz na ile poszczególne mniejszości mogły lub potrafiły wykorzystać sprzyjające im przekształcenia formalnoprawne. Bardzo duża dysproporcja w różnorakich przejawach tej publicznej obecności (dwujęzyczne nazwy miejscowości, urzędów, szkół, stosowanie języka pomocniczego, działalność społeczna i polityczna, oświata, dziedzictwo historyczne) pomiędzy poszczególnymi narodowościami jest spowodowana zróżnicowanymi przyczynami. Z pewnością do sprzyjających czynników należy relatywnie duża liczebność i koncentracja terytorialna, ale decydująca jest też aktywność działaczy i lokalnych społeczności oraz wewnętrzna integracja danej zbiorowości. Dzięki tym uwarunkowaniom niektóre tzw. historyczne mniejszości, wykorzystując zmiany prawne, stały się trwałą częścią przestrzeni publicznej w Polsce.
