The aim of this paper is to discuss selected rhetorical strategies applied by journalists during television interviews, as well as to consider whether they demonstrate the professional skills of journalists, or if they should be treated as examples of violating journalistic ethics and standards. The following three interviews have been analyzed in this paper: of Tomasz Lis (with Lech Wałęsa), Monika Olejnik (with Jacek Kurski) and Jacek Żakowski (with Leszek Miller). The author presents the rhetorical strategies used by the journalists and concludes that – as strategies involving the prevention of interlocutors from speaking and presenting their views, misinterpretation of information and journalists’ malevolence – they should be considered incompatible with the ethics of journalism.

The findings of this research project on news ombudsmen are mainly based on an overview of the Dutch situation, two surveys (in 2008 and 2011) completed by members of the international Organization of News Ombudsmen, an analysis of more than 400 columns of three Dutch ombudsmen and an analyses of about three hundred comments on the columns. Key questions were: do the ombudsmen and readers’ representatives have an independent position, a statute or a weekly column? What issues are mostly being complained about? What are the main topics of their columns? Do they have the opportunity to adopt an independent and critical stand towards the editorial staff ?

The financial crisis as a realization of self-fulfilling prophecy reveals an important ethical dilemma of journalist’s responsibility. The dilemma is expressed in a question, if one should publish the information on crisis, since the publication probably increases the degree of crisis. The difficulty to answer this question points to the shortcomings of the standard conception of moral reasoning and to an approach to the relation between general normative theory and applied ethics. Instead of the standard conception the author proposes a „grammatical” account of general/applied ethics relation, connected with the Wittgenstein’s approach to the question of necessity in mathematics and other non-descriptive disciplines.

The aim of the article is to analyse the practice of EU structural funds projects’ publicity in Lithuania, concentrating on the issue of the so called “paid articles,” used by many of the EU fund- ed projects. It is considered to be a negative practice, since in this case a big part of the information on EU funded projects is presented in a cost ineffective way. It might also reinforce the tendencies in the media to expect companies or public institutions to pay for a publication instead of relying on ethical relationships with public relations sources. The article attempts to show how the publicity measures of EU structural funds projects have adapted to the existing practices and have reinforced them.

The freedom of the press is very highly placed in hierarchy of values legally protected in national and international legal order. The manner and scope of the protection of the freedom of the press is determined not only by the standards of domestic law, but, above all, the standards of international law. They set the standard of freedom of the press binding on the countries which are signatories of international agreements on which this standard has been established. Any violation of the European standard of freedom of the press constitutes the reason for incriminating a particular state and justifi es the application of the recourse for compensation against it. The aim of the article is to examine the changes occurred within the European law in the sphere of protection of freedom of expression. In particular, it is aimed at pointing out the process of giving up the model of absolute freedom of the press in favour of the conditional model proposed in domestic legal systems of Member States of the Council of Europe. An analysis is made of both historical and current case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The author also identifi es the relationship between the position taken by the Court of Human Rights and the views expressed by the Court of Justice of the European Union on the basis of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Studies on the ideas of the Reverend Józef Tischner seen from the angle of the press, radio and television show clearly that he was a public figure, especially in the 1990s. For many people – including journalists – Tischner appeared to be an authority who could raise different subjects, often controversial, and at the same time engage listeners or the audience with his speech. The significant reason for Tischner’s popularity was also the way he communicated. This article aims at showing the rev. Tischner as a public figure. The article has been based on the doctoral dissertation titled The Reverend Józef Tischner in the Polish mass media (1955–2000). Political and media studies.
