The purpose of this research is to describe the character and values of students in coastal areas. This research method is ethnographic. The research subjects were junior high school students whose parents work as fishermen in coastal areas. The results showed that character education carried out in schools, homes, and community environments has made students in coastal area friendly, hard-working, caring towards their parents, independent, and disciplined. Values and character are not formed instantly but through a long process with environmental conditions in the coastal areas that are so challenging.

Leisure-time behavior, including tourist activity among contemporary adolescents has raised great interest of scientists and the representatives of the tourism industry. Not only it is important to estimate the rate of tourism activity among adolescents, but also it is necessary to bear in mind the analysis of behavior shaped on account of their gender, place of residence, or level of education. An attempt to conduct such a study was made on the basis of survey data obtained within the group of 1,067 junior high school students of the selected voivodeships in Poland. The results obtained clearly indicate that almost 1/4 of the students surveyed had not participated in tourist trips. This was particularly noticeable in the case of boys and students living in rural areas. it is important to take broader steps to stimulate young people’s needs for tourism and sightseeing. First of all, from the family which is considered a social institution, it is expected to raise young generations in the spirit of tourism and active leisure. Family’s contemporary problems: increasing poverty, or even its (partial) marginalization are commonly disregarded. A systemic approach (support for families by schools, social organizations, and government units) appears to be a successful solution, but it is a long-term and complex process.

Cel badań. Celem badań była ocena niektórych zachowań zdrowotnych uczniów szkół gimnazjalnych oraz rozpoznanie przyczyn podejmowania zachowań ryzykownych dla zdrowia (palenia papierosów i picia alkoholu) z uwzględnieniem wieku i płci badanych. Materiał i metody. Badaniem objęto 503 uczniów szkół gimnazjalnych województwa śląskiego. Wśród nich było 252 dziewcząt (50,1%) i 251 (49,9%) chłopców. Średni wiek badanych wynosił 14,5 ± 0,8 roku. W badaniu zastosowano metodę sondażową, a narzędziem badawczym był autorski kwestionariusz ankiety. Wyniki.

Background. The aim of the study was to assess some health behaviours of junior high school students and to identify the causes of risk behaviours (smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol), with the consideration of age and sex of the subjects. Material and methods. The study included 503 pupils from junior high schools in the Silesian province. The group consisted of 252 girls (50.1%) and 251 boys (49.9%). The average age of the respondents was 14.5 ± 0.8 years. The study employed a survey method, and the research tool was the author’s own questionnaire. Results. The studied youth presented anti-health behaviours. Over half of the respondents (56.06%) spent their free time sitting in front of the computer. The average age of alcohol initiation was 12.5 ± 1.9 years and of tobacco initiation 12.1 ± 2.2 years; it was independent of the sex of the students (p > 0.05), but depended on their age. The number of pupils both consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes increased with age. Conclusions. The analysed health behaviours of junior high school students deviated significantly from the recommendations for a healthy lifestyle: dietary errors, low physical activity, sedentary lifestyle and the use of stimulants were observed. The most frequent reasons for risk behaviours (smoking and drinking alcohol) were: fun, curiosity and influence of the peer group. Their occurrence was independent of gender, but dependent on age.
