Prince Frederick, Cardinal Jagiellonian (1468-1503), is one of the most outstanding, though still unrecognizable representatives of the Polish episcopate at the turn of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. As the youngest son of King Casimir IV Jagiellonian and Elizabeth of the Habsburg family, he was destined to become a clergyman, in order to support the dynasty on behalf of the Church. Frederick fulfilled this task perfectly. Climbing quickly the levels of church dignity as bishop of Cracow (from 1488), then while maintaining the Wawel Cathedral, also the archbishop of Gniezno and the primate (from 1493) and the cardinal (1493), he showed an effort in pastoral matters of the dioceses entrusted to him, as well as undertaking significant activities in the political arena. He devoted special merits to his older brother King John I Olbracht (1459-1501). He skillfully elected him to the throne of Cracow in 1492 and then managed the state during the Black Sea expedition of Olbracht in 1497 and repeatedly supplied the royal treasury with significant amounts of money from the church fund. As a politicain, Cardinal Frederick displayed an excellent sense and orientation both in the internal state and on the international arena. The aim of the article is to outline the political biography of Frederick Jagiellonian by recalling his actions in the era of Jan I Olbracht.

In the polish historiography of the nineteenth century the Catholic hierarchs are seen primarily as representatives of the conservative authorities, inhibiting the development of new forms of social life. In fact, with few exceptions, changes in the relations between social classes and within each of them, have been taking by them with a strong reserve, and even resentment. In the most expressive way it was reflected in relation to the situation of the lower social classes, that in the second half of the century, begun to occupy an important place in the arena of European civilization’s transformation. In this context, an interesting example would be for researchers activities of Jan Puzyna, prince, bishop and cardinal. The controversy, which over the years has been accumulated around his person, caused that today is identified of the most negative features of Polish Catholicism. However, while the creation of such assessments, has its justification in the essence of collective memory, it is the duty of the historian to verify it.

Prymas Polski kard.

Poland’s Primate Cardinal. Stefan Wyszynski caring for the western and northern areas was the initiator and protector of the development of religious life in Western Pomerania. Cardinal Wyszynski’s long-term endeavours and efforts in the Holy See were indeed successful, as in 1972, along with other Polish dioceses in the western and northern dioceses the following ones were created: Gorzów, Szczecin-Kamiensk, another one covering Central Pomerania and the Diocese of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg, based in Koszalin, which referred to the tradition of the former bishopric of Kolobrzeg. This was included in the boundaries of the Gniezno metropolis. The primate of Poland visited Koszalin, Kolobrzeg, and Slupsk twice. During his trips, he preached, sparing no efforts to encourage people to keep the faith and fidelity to the Catholic Church and the Christian traditions of the Polish nation.

The letter of pope Paul VI Africae terrarum is the first official Church document consecrated to Africa. It was issued on 29th of October 1967. It shows a positive perspective on African Traditional Religion. The second important group of texts regarding the attitude towards ATR are different texts said by John Paul II during his travels to Africa. Special attention should be paid also to the letter of card. F. Arinze consecrated to the pastoral care of the followers of African Traditional Religion.

Cardinal Wyszynski was a defender of basic values, such as human being, family, nation and church during communistic enslavement. He defended the truth concerning their being and dignity, he reminded others of their basic rights and duties, he stood up for these rights when the state government violated them. He defended the freedom of human beings, families, nation and the Church pointing out that only through true freedom can they really develop and realise their vocation and mission. He pointed out the need for justice done out of love, towards every human being, family and nation. He spoke clearly about duties and responsibilities of the state and the Church towards every human being, families, who are the cradle of of the nation, and the nation itself, which is family of families. He portrayed the Church as playing a special role for those societies bringing into their life not only the extramundane dimension, God’s grace and salvation, but also caring about national interest when it comes to natural dimension. The Church must be free in its activity in order to fulfill well its religious and social role. The Primate recalls the need for state and the Church to cooperate out of concern for the man, the family and the nation. When the communistic state didn’t fulfill its role and acted against families and nation, he opposed those actions calling for dignity, rights, truth, freedom and justice towards every human being, family and family of families- the nation.
