A decision made in April 1836 by the Bishop of Podlasie to close down the seminary and the library of the Institute of the Apostolic Union of Secular Priests in Węgrów was the first controversial move for the Bartholomites. Soon after, in 1839, their provostry was finally dissolved when Bishop Gutkowski appointed a diocese priest the parish priest of Węgrów. The Bishop’s decisions ran counter to the will expressed by the founder Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, who had established the provostry in the 18th century. In consequence, superior rev. Kacper Jaworski filed a complaint with the government, in which he reiterated Jan Krasiński’s will to leave his legacy to the Institute. Nonetheless, the Bishop made other attempts to show that Krasiński’s legacy had been bequeathed to the parish, which proved entirely unfounded. Finally, with the other bishops remaining passive, the dispute led to a complete dissolution of the Institute in 1850.

The purpose of the following article is to outline the process of the dissolution of the Society of Jesus in Austrian Silesia based on the archival complex, little known in Poland, gathered by the Land Archives in Opava (Zemský archive v Opava). The division of Silesia between Prussia and the Habsburg monarchy, as a result of the First Silesian War in 1742, had an impact on the organizational structure of the Society of Jesus in Silesia. The Jesuit college in Opava and the residence in Cieszyn together with the associated mission centres belonged to the Czech Province (Provincia Bohemiae), therefore they were liquidated in 1773 – in contrast to the Jesuit institutions in Prussian Silesia, belonging to a separate Province of Silesia (Provincia Silesiae). The dissolution also partially affected the Jesuit college in Nysa, which owned several villages on the Austrian side. The main intention of the following study is to present the characteristics of the activities of the central Austrian court administration, used not only as part of the dissolution of the Society of Jesus in Austria, but also in the so-called Josephine dissolution carried out a decade later, in the 1780s. The method of operation of the court bureaucracy in terms of work coordination was presented on the basis of the Opava archival documents created in the immediate period of the dissolution. The history of the institutions under discussion (until the dissolution) is only briefly outlined, due to the fact that it has already been developed in the literature. A tabular list of archival materials from the collection of the Royal Office in Opava and a personal list of Jesuits affected by the dissolution were presented. The publication is not an exhaustive analysis of archival sources, but a contribution to further research into the history of the Society of Jesus in Silesia.

Celem poniższego artykułu jest naszkicowanie przebiegu działań kasacyjnych Towarzystwa Jezusowego na Śląsku Austriackim na tle mało znanego w Polsce zespołu archiwalnego zgromadzonego przez Archiwum Ziemskie w Opawie (Zemský archiv v Opavě). Podział Śląska pomiędzy Prusy i monarchię habsburską, dokonany w wyniku I wojny śląskiej w 1742 roku, odbił się na strukturze organizacyjnej Towarzystwa Jezusowego na Śląsku. Kolegium jezuickie w Opawie oraz rezydencja w Cieszynie wraz z przynależnymi ośrodkami misyjnymi należały do Prowincji Czeskiej (Provincia Bohemiae), podległy zatem likwidacji bezpośrednio w 1773 roku – w przeciwieństwie do placówek jezuickich na Śląsku Pruskim, należących do odrębnej Prowincji Śląskiej (Provincia Silesiae). Działania kasacyjne dotknęły również częściowo nyskie kolegium jezuickie, które posiadało kilka wsi po stronie austriackiej. Głównym zamierzeniem poniższego opracowania jest przedstawienie charakterystyki działań centralnej austriackiej administracji nadwornej, zastosowanej nie tylko w ramach kasaty Towarzystwa Jezusowego na ziemiach austriackich, lecz również w tzw. kasatach józefińskich przeprowadzonych dekadę później, w latach 80. XVIII wieku. Sposób funkcjonowania biurokracji nadwornej w kwestii koordynacji prac przybliżono na podstawie opawskich dokumentów archiwalnych powstałych w bezpośrednim okresie kasaty. Historię omawianych placówek (do kasaty) naszkicowano jedynie pokrótce, ze względu na fakt, iż została ona już opracowana w literaturze. Zaprezentowano tabelaryczny wykaz archiwaliów zbioru Urzędu Królewskiego w Opawie oraz spis personalny jezuitów dotkniętych kasatą. Publikacja nie jest wyczerpującą analizą źródeł archiwalnych, lecz przyczynkiem do dalszych badań historii działalności Towarzystwa Jezusowego na Śląsku.

The Church performs its task of leading people to salvation, among others, through organizing chaplaincy in parishes. It means that parishes are extremely important centres of each diocese and the community of the faithful. It was the same in Lublin in the 1960s. Due to the fact that there were only two parishes in the city, the pastoral work of diocesan priests was also supported by religious orders. However, the tsarist government, in November 1864, dissolved most of the monasteries in the Kingdom of Poland, which caused difficulties in providing appropriate pastoral care. Therefore, at the end of 1864, the then administrator of the Diocese of Lublin Rev. Kazimierz Sosnowski made an attempt to reorganize a parish life in Lublin in order to satisfy religious needs of the faithful and fill the gap left by the dissolved monasteries. The reorganization involved creating two new parishes in the churches which had belonged to the Capuchins and Bernardines before their dissolution and transferring a parish service from St Nicholas Church to St Agnes Church, which had been in the possession of the Augustinians before the dissolution. In order to conduct this project, Rev. Sosnowski started negotiations with the Government Commission of Internal Affairs and Clergy, which finally ended in 1866. This article details the various stages of these negotiations, their causes and effects.
