The invention of the authors of the present communication consists in replacing the cautery used in restoration with a small-scale electric soldering iron. After an appropriate modification and building a circuit where the lighting bulb acts as a resistor it is possible to achieve varying heating capacities that prove highly desirable in restoration work.

In his endeavours to improve the conservation workshop the author has designed two units: a reheater and a cauter. The units are employed in conservation ateliers of the Faculty for the Conservation of Easel Paintings and Wooden Polychromed Sculpture, attached to the Department of the Conservation of Works of Art of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. The reheater has proved to be very useful in the removal of oil and distemper recoatings, uncovering of repainted gildings, removal of metal regildings, fastening of damaged technological layers of paintings and sculptures with wax and resing masses and the use of these masses in wood impregnation.
