Istotę artykułu stanowi problematyka przemocy wobec dzieci, a w szczególności zjawisko stosowania wobec nich kar fizycznych. Ponadto celem jest zwrócenie uwagi na pewien dualizm w ocenach i postawach społecznych wobec określonych form dyscyplinowania dzieci, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem klapsów. W oparciu o stan współczesnej wiedzy wskazano specyfikę zagadnienia przemocy, wychodząc od definicji, przez regulacje prawne i przegląd statystyczny, po negatywne konsekwencje kar cielesnych. Analizom towarzyszy refleksja nad potencjałem wychowawczym rodziców i opiekunów.

The essence of the article is the issue of violence against children and the phenomenon of corporal punishment in particular. The aim of the paper is to draw attention to a dualism of social attitudes and evaluations concernig disciplinary behaviours towards children, especially spanking. Based on the contemporary knowledge, the peculiarity of the violence problem has been described, starting with the definition, statistical review, and legal regulations to the negative consequences of corporal punishment. The analysis is accompanied by reflection on the carer’s parental potential.

W artykule omówiono wyniki ogólnopolskich badań surveyowych prowadzonych na zlecenie Rzecznika Praw Dziecka dotyczących postaw polskich rodziców wobec kar cielesnych, stosowania ich wobec własnych dzieci oraz wiedzy nt. prawnego zakazu stosowania takich kar w Polsce. Zaproponowano także kierunki działań służących ograniczeniu stosowania kar cielesnych przez polskich rodziców.

The article discusses the results of nationwide surveys conducted at the request of the Children’s Ombudsman regarding the attitudes of Polish parents towards corporal punishment, their use of corporal punishment and knowledge about the legal prohibition of it in Poland. Article also propose directions of activities aimed at limiting the use of corporal punishment by Polish parents.
